Easy To Love
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know too well that I'm just wasting precious time
In thinking such a thing could be
That you could ever care for me
I'm sure you hate to hear that I adore you, dear
But grant me, just the same
I'm not entirely to blame

For you'd be so easy to love
So easy to idolize
All others above

So worth the yearning for
So swell to keep every home fire burning for
We'd be so grand at the game
So carefree together

That it does seem a shame
That you can't see
Your future with me
'Cause you'd be oh, so easy to love

We'd be so grand at the game
So carefree together
That it does seem a shame
That you can't see

Your future with me
'Cause you'd be oh, so easy to love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ella Fitzgerald's song "Easy to Love" are a lament from someone who loves another deeply but believes they have no chance with that person. The singer expresses their feelings of adoration and their disappointment in knowing that their feelings aren't reciprocated. They acknowledge that they are wasting their time by loving someone who could never love them back. Despite this, they cannot help but think that this person would be so easy to love, idolize, and yearn for. The singer truly believes that a future with this person would be grand as they could be carefree and happy together.

The lyrics suggest that the singer has been pining for this person for some time, and although they know that it's pointless, they can't help themselves. They are fully aware that this situation is futile, but they still hold out hope that the person they love will eventually return their love. The singer's use of language portrays a profound sense of longing and desperation, and the song's melody only accentuates these sentiments.

Overall, the lyrics remind us that love is a powerful and often uncontrollable emotion. The singer understands that it might not be possible for their love to be reciprocated, but they cannot shake the feeling that this person would be oh so easy to love. It's a sad song about unrequited love, but it's also a testament to the enduring nature of human emotions.

From the first of Miss Ella's "Songbooks," and sublime beyond words, as all of the tunes/performances on all of the "Songbooks" are.
The tune itself has an interesting provenance:
It was written for the 1934 Broadway production "Anything Goes," and was cut because the male lead thought it was too range-y...
...and then, two years later, it was used in a film, and look who introduced it:
(1936) "Born to Dance - "
sung by Eleanor Powell and James Stewart, Frances Langford and danced by her and Buddy Ebsen.
Yes, Jimmy Stewart, and the future Jed Clampett, introduced this great song...
...and it became a standard...
...and exactly 20 years later, Miss Ella recorded it for this stunning collection.

Listening in 2020. This woman was so ahead of her time. Timeless

Stunning is an understatement. She deliverers the introduction with such pathos that it jumps out and hugs the listener. And then you consider the difficulty of the vocal line for the ballad itself. The lady slays without a doubt. Other singers of this period compare slightly, but Ella is queen supreme.

Imagine being the pianist. Just you and Ella, moving through that absolutely stunning introduction

@MrLenoir99

And the drummer and the double bass... To me this whole session in combo is so much above her performances with big band.

One hardly knows where to begin, what to say. Yet, something must be expressed! In Italian, there is an opera term called “legato.” It means the words, the notes are “tied” together. Perhaps, “seamless” would be a better translation. Anyway, that’s what the divine Ella does here! Then, intuitively, she sings all the vowels so beautifully. It’s beyond description. Please forgive my babbling. We can only be thankful that we are alive to appreciate this masterpiece of singing, of human expression. Thank you, dearest Ella! Our lives are blessed by your artistry!

Ella's voice is so easy to love - and what a great piano accompaniment.

I think it's Oscar Peterson, he's great! He and Ella played together a lot that's why I think it's him, also it sounds a lot like things Oscar would play so I'm pretty sure I'm right... :)

@Sander1945

According to Wikipedia it must have been Paul Smith.
