I Was Doing All Right
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was doing all right
Nothing but rainbows in my sky
I was doing all right
Till you came by.

Had no cause to complain
Life was as sweet as apple pie
Never noticed the rain
Till you came by.

But now whenever you`re away
Can`t sleep nights and suffer all the day
I just sit and wonder
If love isn`t one big blunder.

But when you hold me tight
Tingling all through, I feel somehow
I was doing all right
But I`m doing better than ever now.

But now whenever you`re away
Can`t sleep nights and suffer all the day
I just sit and wonder
If love isn`t one big blunder.

But when you hold me tight
Tinglin` all through, I feel somehow
I was doing all right

But I`m doing better
Better than ever now.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ella Fitzgerald's song "I Was Doing All Right" describe the overwhelming feeling of falling in love unexpectedly. Prior to meeting this person, the singer's life was "doing all right" and there were "nothing but rainbows" in their sky. They were content with their life and had "no cause to complain." However, everything changed when this person came into their life. The singer becomes aware of the rain and the troubles that exist in the world only after this person arrives.

The lyrics become more introspective when the singer is away from their lover. They can't seem to sleep or function properly when this person is not around. The singer reflects on the possibility that love is just one big mistake, but when they are in the presence of their lover, they feel alive and tingling with emotion. The final line solidifies the idea that the singer is not just "doing all right," but they are now "doing better than ever."

Overall, the lyrics to "I Was Doing All Right" showcase the transformative power of love and how it can turn a person's life around completely. The song captures the feeling of being completely smitten with someone and realizing that life was never truly complete until that person came along.

Oh..how I love this song! I was raised with this wonderful music! I remember the words from childhood with my mother, a Lyric Soprano, singing with Ella!! My father ""acquired"" my Mother""s 78''s of this beautiful song...and others!!..Heaven only knows where they all are now.. It is almost too painful to listen to...

Actually, this was recorded in January of 1938 and it is Ella Fitzgerald and Her Savoy Eight, a small group of the great Chick Webb Band ( I have the Cd and all of Ella's early recordings before 1948.). Her early voice and style has a clarity and freedom not found in her big band recordings after 1939..
