Where Or When
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It seems we stood and talked like this, before
We looked at each other in the same way then
But I can't remember where or when

The clothes you're wearing are the clothes, you wore
The smile you are smiling you were smiling then
But I can't remember where or when
Some things that happened for the first time
Seem to be happenin' again
And so it seems that we have met before
And laughed before, and loved before
But who knows where or when

Some things that happened for the first time
Seem to be happenin' again
And so it seems that we have met before
And laughed before, and loved before
But who knows where or when

Transcribed by Todd Peach
When you're awake, the things you think
Come from the dream you dream
Thought has wings, and lots of things
Are seldom what they seem
Sometimes you think you've lived before
All that you live to day
Things you do come back to you

As though they knew the way
Oh the tricks your mind can play

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ella Fitzgerald's "Where Or When" are about a feeling of déjà vu, a sense that two people have met prior to their present encounter. The song begins with the lines: "It seems we stood and talked like this before/We looked at each other in the same way then/But I can't remember where or when." The singer is acknowledging that the conversation and connection they're experiencing with their current companion feels like something they've experienced before, but they can't quite pinpoint when or where that might have been.

The second verse describes the details of the encounter: the clothes their companion is wearing are the same clothes they wore during the previous meeting, and they're smiling in the same way they did before. But the singer still can't place where or when they first had this connection. The final verse broadens the concept to suggest that oftentimes things we experience for the first time can feel familiar in subsequent experiences, creating a sense of "laughing before, and loving before."

The lyrics highlight the idea of eternal love, that two souls who are meant to be together can continue to find each other no matter where or when they are. The song also evokes nostalgia, as it taps into the many moments in our lives where we might have experienced a similar sense of déjà vu. Overall, the song has a dreamy quality to it, like a longing for a love that transcends time and space.

I’m here cause Ella is so beautiful, truly indescribable, makes me want to go to some far away European town where I’ll hope to find the one true love that doesn’t end in two years

Amazing as Ella goes from one middle pitch to a lower one so effortlessly!

Thank you for putting this up. Loved this song since I was a kid in the 40s. Ella really has a voice like silk and cream. Shame she didn't realise just how good she was.

I'm here because I have loved Ella's voice since I first heard it in the late 40's & in 1952 I went from N. Carolina to Washington DC with five other Marines just to see her perform.
