Skylark
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Skylark
Have you anything to say to me?
Won't you tell me where my love can be?
Is there a meadow in the mist
Where someone's waiting to be kissed?

Skylark
Have you seen a valley green with spring?
Where my heart can go a journeying
Over the shadows and the rain
To a blossom covered lane

And in your lonely flight
Haven't you heard the music in the night?
Wonderful music, faint as a will o' the wisp
Crazy as a loon, sad as a gypsy serenading the moon

Oh skylark
I don't know if you can find these things
But my heart is riding on your wings
So if you see them anywhere
Won't you lead me there?

Oh skylark
I don't know if you can find these things
But my heart is riding on your wings

So if you see them anywhere
Won't you lead me there?

I can only pray she knew how much she meant to so many of us. There will never be anyone like Miss Ella. RIP, lovely lady.

Exatamente ❤

@michaeljordan9879

The phrasing is just perfection. She makes a lyric wrap around you like silk. This is an Ella song forever. Nobody else can do it.

@bradsahl3090

I also love k.d. lang's version. It's a little more soaring, and a little less structured and metered than Ella's, but they're both great.

@evanhughes1510

Linda Ronstadt did a good version

@fliprim

For me the greatest version is 16yo Rita Payes with Joan Chamorro (2016). Less "singerly", no swoops and scoops like most jazz singers, more open-handedly emotional but hugely musical. As a bonus she gives us a sublime trombone (!) solo in the middle. Her Desafinado at 14yo was better than any of Ella's, better rhythmically, better dynamically... and for me Ella is a godess.

@rgoddess1

greatest singer of all time. her voice is crystal clear..

@patelvin2765

Ella Fitzgerald sing Skylark is one of the most beautiful sounds ever heard on this planet.

@Imani_AM

Ella's voice, and the flute playing...this song is bliss 🎶

@RegineNoelle23

I've slowly and surely been platonically falling in love with this woman's talent and her voice. Way to go woman.
