Lush Life
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I used to visit all the very gay places
Those come-what-may places
Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life
To get the feel of life
From jazz and cocktails

The girls I knew had sad and sullen gray faces
With distinguish traces
That used to be there
You could see where they'd been washed away
By too many through the day
Twelve o'clock tales

Then you came along with your siren song
To tempt me to madness
I thought for awhile that your poignant smile
Was tinged with the sadness
Of a great love for me
Ah yes, I was wrong
Again, I was wrong

Life is lonely again
And only last year
Everything seemed so sure
Now life is awful again
A trough full of hearts could only be a bore

A week in Paris could ease the bite of it
All I care is to smile in spite of it

I'll forget you, I will
While yet you are still
Burning inside my brain
Romance is mush
Stifling those who strive
So I'll live a lush life in some small dive

And there I'll be, while I rot with the rest
Of those whose lives are lonely too

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ella Fitzgerald's song "Lush Life" are about a person reflecting on their past and present life experiences. The song's opening lines describe how the singer used to visit various lively and spontaneous places of entertainment to help them feel more alive. However, the people they knew there often had sad and worn expressions that were the result of living in the moment too much. The singer then sings that a person came into their life who they believed was singing a song of love that was directed towards them. But, as the singer ultimately comes to realize, this person's attentions were not real, and their "love" was nothing more than a fleeting moment of infatuation.

The song goes on to describe how life is once again lonely and how everything that was once so clear and sure is now muddied and complicated. The singer sees Paris as a possible escape from the difficulties of life but ultimately decides that the key is simply to keep smiling in spite of it all. The song's final lines paint a picture of the singer having become one of many people living lonely lives in small bars, abandoned to a life of drinking to forget their troubles and concerns.

This song is one of Ella Fitzgerald's signature pieces, and it has earned its place in the canon of American jazz standards. Its lyrics present a bleak and melancholy vision of life, yet at the same time, they suggest a kind of resilience and determination to keep smiling in the face of adversity. Overall, "Lush Life" is a poignant reflection on the human condition and the ways in which we seek to cope with the trials and tribulations of existence.

Melodically this is one tune that most singers won't even attempt. The chord changes are difficult, but Ella, as usual, just hears everything and sings it perfectly.

@Lazarus1001

it's far from perfect. she makes tons and tons of mistakes. it is in fact a terrible performance as all her other performances are.

Could you believe that Billy Staryhorn wrote Lush Life when he was seventeen years old .
Such great lyrics full with a sense of realism and pain !

I knew he wrote it but had no idea he wrote it at 17. Astounding. How he could even imagine these things at that age. 👏👏❤️❤️. Thank you.
