Lullaby of Birdland
Sarah Vaughan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lullaby of birdland, that's what I
Always hear when you sigh
Never in my wordland
Could there be ways to reveal
In a phrase how I feel

Have you ever heard two turtle doves
Bill and coo when they love?
That's the kind of magic
Music we make with our lips when we kiss

And there's a weepy old willow
He really knows how to cry
That's how I'd cry on my pillow
If you should tell me farewell and goodbye

Lullaby of birdland whisper low
Kiss me sweet and we'll go
Flyin' high in birdland
High in the sky up above
All because we're in love

So bi ba ya boo ba doo bi du da bu bi di ba du be da
So bi ba ya boo ba doo bi du da bu bi di ba du be da
Sha ba ba ba be dee ba ba ba da ba ba da da da dee ya
Sha ba ba ba be dee ba ba ba da ba ba da da da dee ya

And there's a weepy old willow
He really knows how to cry
That's how I'd cry on my pillow
If you should tell me farewell and goodbye

Lullaby of birdland whisper low
Kiss me sweet and we'll go
Flyin' high in birdland
High in the sky up above
All because we're in love

Sha ba ba ba be dee ba ba ba da ba ba da da da dee ya

Overall Meaning

The song "Lullaby of Birdland" by Sarah Vaughan is a romantic ballad that uses bird sounds as a metaphor for the feeling of love. Throughout the lyrics, the singer describes hearing the lullaby of birdland whenever their lover sighs, and how they feel it's impossible to express their emotions in words. The second verse compares the magic of their love to the cooing of two turtle doves, while the third verse portrays a weeping willow tree as a symbol of the sadness that would come if they were to say goodbye. The song ends with the singer imagining a future where they'll fly high in birdland, the metaphorical place where they can be together in love.

I'm very happy to have found this song.
Her voice is wonderful.

Yes ...the Japanese are more savvy about jazz than USA citizens ....most high school students here listen to c--p ! Gonna go listen to Sadao Watanabe...Hiroshima ...

@veronicaalleyne

that's why they called her the divine one

She's underrated, but the cleanest voice of the blues. That's also saying she's underrated because the Blues is not "proper". The best singers aren't.

Nina Simone is a pure product of Julliard, eminent, perhaps too perfect as the first of her kind : Black Woman to graduate on a full ride. Can't say she disappointed. I like her better than Ella Fitzgerald by far but the difference is here for you to pick.

@Lightningslick

Jimmy Jones is one those those unsung musicians who does not get the credit he deserves. You'd be surprised how many sessions he was in on.
