Love Come Back to Me
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We can't go on this way,
Laughing at love, day after day,
I'm sincere, you're unfair,
We can't go on this way.

"It's all in fun" you say,
After it's done, someone must pay,
Then there'll be, so much misery,
We can't go on this way.

Hiding behind a mask of laughters,
It won't wipe away the curse,
Even though it's fun we're after,
I'll take you sweetheart,
For better or worse.

If you would only say,
"Yes it's OK, let's name the day,"
Might as well, love will tell,
We can't go on this way.

Hiding behind a mask of laughters,
It won't wipe away the curse,
Even though it's fun we're after,
I'll take you sweetheart,
For better or worse.

If you would only say,
"Yes it's OK, let's name the day,"
Might as well, love will tell,

We can't go on this way,
We can't go on this way...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ella Fitzgerald and Her Savoy Eight's song "We Can't Go On This Way" are a plea to a lover to stop pretending and hiding behind jokes and laughter, and to face their true feelings for each other. The first verse acknowledges the fact that they are both continuing on in this unfulfilling, insincere relationship. While the singer is sincere in their feelings, the other person is being unfair, and they cannot continue on in this way.

The chorus confronts the idea that the relationship is just a game or for fun. The singer knows that eventually, someone will have to pay for the insincerity and it will lead to misery. They cannot continue to live in denial and expect it to be a happy and carefree relationship. The second verse continues the theme of hiding behind laughter as a mask. The singer knows that no matter how much they joke and laugh, it will not remove the curse of insincerity and unhappiness from their relationship. The singer then declares that they will take their lover for better or worse - meaning they will stay with them even if it is not easy.

The final verse is a call to action for their lover. If they truly feel the same way, they should stop pretending and just name the day. Love will eventually reveal itself, and they cannot keep on living in this unfulfilling way. The repetition of the line "We can't go on this way" emphasizes the seriousness of the situation and the need for change.

Overall, the lyrics of "We Can't Go On This Way" are a poignant critique of insincerity and a plea for authenticity in a relationship. They speak to the idea that although pretending and hiding behind laughter might seem like an easier option in the moment, it ultimately leads to misery.

Greatest coloratura soprano, greatest big band singer, greatest jazz singer, all together. And let's face it, only Joan was used to singing without a microphone!

to think that Dame Joan was only using barely half of vocal powers, hail to La Stupenda!

No matter what kind of day I'm having. If i come and see Joan's huge voice I have an awe-inspired moment of giggles.

I remember seeing that show when it first aired back in the early 60s!!! And they also sang "Three little maids from school!! The best line though was after one of their trios, Dinah Shore said on camera "I could have used the mike in my throat for that song" I'll never forget it as long as I live! Dame Joan was just a gem on the show and the three ladies got along beautifully!

So much fun to discover this! I remember hearing Joan Sutherland sing in Rome in the early 70s; I heard Ella Fitzgerald sing there the same year. Unfortunately I never heard Dinah Shore in person. What a great clip.

I love how Joan's just sitting there, tossing off several high C's while Dinah and Ella struggle to make themselves audible

The best part was watching how much fun they were having. (They were all tops in their fields, so no competition in that sense.)
