Lullaby Of The Leaves
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rustling of the leaves used to be my lullaby
In the sunny South when I was a tot so high
And now that I have grown
And myself alone

Cradle me where Southern skies
Can watch me with a million eyes
Sing me to sleep
Lullaby of the leaves

Cover me with Heaven's blue
And let me dream a dream or two
Sing me to sleep
Lullaby of the leaves

I'm breezing along, along with the breeze
I'm hearing a song, a song through the trees
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
That fine melody caressing the shore
Familiar to me, I've heard it before
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, that's Southland

Don't I feel it in my soul
And don't I know I've reached my goal

Sing me to sleep
Lullaby of the leaves

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ella Fitzgerald's "Lullaby Of The Leaves" present a nostalgic remembrance of childhood memories. The opening verse "Rustling of the leaves used to be my lullaby, in the sunny South when I was a tot so high" implies that the persona is revisiting memories of their early years when they found comfort in falling asleep to the sound of rustling leaves. Although the persona is all grown up now, they still wish to be cradled where the Southern skies can watch over them like a protective guardian with a million eyes.

In the following verse, the persona beseeches the heavens to cover them with a blanket of blue, where they can dream a dream or two while being sung to sleep by the same rustling leaves. The chorus sums up the entire meaning behind the song, which is essentially a plea to nature to provide comfort and solace, just like it did when we were younger. The third verse establishes a sense of familiarity and belonging in the persona's soul and asserts that they have reached their goal - that being finding peace and calm.

‘... I only want five things,
five favorite roots.

The first is love without end.

The second is to see autumn.
I cannot be without leaves
flying away and returning to earth.

Third is grave winter,
the rain I loved, the caress
of a fire in a wilderness of cold.

In fourth place is summertime
round like a watermelon.

The fifth thing is your eyes...’

Lullaby Of The Leaves is a song I first heard as a boy in the 1940s, and one that became an immediate favourite. It remains so now, even as an 80-year old in 2020. There have been some classic recordings of it over time, but I really believe this interpretation by Ella the best reading of all. Voices fit songs, and hers is the perfect fit for this. Thank you for the share, RoundMidnightTV.

I found the sheet music to this song in a piano book I've had for years. Several days ago, I played it for the first time and thought it was lovely. So, I searched for a recording of it and was not disappointed to find this rendition! Such a silky, romantic voice! Thank you for sharing!
