The Thrill Is Gone
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The thrill is gone
The thrill is gone away
The thrill is gone, baby
The thrill is gone away
You know you done me wrong, baby
And you'll be sorry someday

The thrill is gone
It's gone away from me
The thrill is gone, baby
The thrill is gone away from me
Although, I'll still live on
But so lonely I'll be

The thrill is gone
It's gone away for good
The thrill is gone, baby
It's gone away for good
Someday I know I'll be open-armed, baby
Just like I know a good man should

You know I'm free, free now, baby
I'm free from your spell
Oh, I'm free, free, free now
I'm free from your spell

And now that it's all over
All I can do is wish you well

Overall Meaning

The song "The Thrill is Gone" by Ella Fitzgerald is a tale of heartbreak and moving on. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song. As the singer states that "the thrill is gone" and "it's gone away for good," it becomes apparent that she has come to terms with the fact that she's no longer in love. She knows that the relationship is over, and she's accepted it.

The next lines reveal that the singer has been wronged by her lover, and she's acutely aware of this. She knows that her lover will someday regret what they've done to her, and this is a form of closure for her. She's putting the relationship behind her and moving forward, but at the same time, she's acknowledging the hurt and betrayal that she's lived through.

The rest of the song speaks to the singer's feelings of loneliness and sadness in the aftermath of the breakup. She acknowledges that she will still be living on, but her loneliness will never go away. However, the song finishes on an optimistic note where she speaks of being open-armed and ready to embrace another love someday. In the end, the singer has moved on, and all she can do is hope that her former lover does the same.

No, the beginning is Ella Fitzgerald´s interpretation of the true original composition - not the simple 12-bar Blues frame by B.B. King and others....

Paul Kirton

The first one is a completely different song. Just the title is the same. It's a jazz song done by Billy Holiday and Chet Baker. She then switched to a blues song made famous by BB King. I like both but they're different songs from different decades.
