Southern Belle
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Killing a southern belle is all you know how to do
That and give other people hell
It's what they expect from you too
But I wouldn't have you how you want

I don't want to walk around
I don't even want to breathe
I live in a southern town
Where all you can do is grit yr teeth

But I wouldn't have you how you want
How come you're not ashamed of what you are?
And sorry that you're the one she got?
Ain't nobody looking now

Nobody nothing's said
No one's about to shout
Nobody's seen red
But I wouldn't have you how you want

You're killing a southern belle

Overall Meaning

Elliott Smith’s song “Southern Belle” speaks about a destructive person who only knows how to kill and torture people like a southern belle. Smith goes on to say that this person is not ashamed of who they are, and they are not apologetic for hurting those around them. He addresses the person’s violent tendencies and their desire to torment those near them, alluding to the pain and suffering this individual can cause.

Smith paints a vivid picture of living in a small, southern town where the only option is to grit one’s teeth and bear the pain silently. Nobody is speaking out, nobody is seeing red. Smith's lyrics seem to be capturing the hopelessness and despair felt by those who find themselves at the mercy of a toxic persona.

Overall, the song portrays Smith's ability to craft scenes of torment and convey the despair felt by those caught in a struggle. It’s a haunting and complex track that speaks to the torment one can inflict upon society and oneself.

Killing a southern belleIs all you know how to do
That, and give other people hell
It's what they expect from you too
But I wouldn't have you how you want
I don't want to walk around
I don't even want to breathe
I live in a southern town
Where all you can do is grit your teeth
But I wouldn't have you how you want
How come you're not ashamed of what you are?
And sorry that you're the one she got?
Ain't nobody talking now
Nobody nothing's said
No one's about to shout
Nobody's seeing red
But I wouldn't have you how you want
You're killing a southern belle

This album was one of the most unusual and refreshing things you could hear during the post grunge era. It's almost ethereal.

@Dats_Lyfe

Agree. Elliott transcended grunge; he was miles above any of it.

@ezrablake1234

Elliott’s material before Either/Or surprises me sometimes with the fact that they were release after early 1990s. Irrelevantly to its surroundings, Elliott straightforwardly did what he could do at best- fighting angst with his music full of smoldering angers!

@havalinachiel7694

yep looking back it was damn dull era but ->also recommended - P.J. Harvey , sure ^^
