Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

Dillus Roady
Eloy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
He's our crazy music fan and works hard each night when we play
When he's coming through the door he's crying for gin and more, he's tall
Later he even looks around to see the girl and hear the sound, he gets high
"Dillus Roady" come on here
"Dillus Roady" we need some beer
When we get tired in the night
He's the one who looks so bright
And hurries up to bring us home
If someone has a sorrow face
He sits down beside his place
And helps to forget the story
Let me tell the story from "Dillus Roady" who's the one we need
He's our crazy music fan and works hard each night when we play
The lyrics to Eloy's "Dillus Roady" portray the story of a dedicated and loyal music lover who goes above and beyond to support his favorite band. Dillus Roady is described as a tall and boisterous figure, who always makes a grand entrance into the venue, crying out for gin and more. He is shown as being highly enthusiastic about the band's performance, keeping a watchful eye on the stage and the girls in the room. His love for music is reflected in his actions, as he works hard each night when the band is playing.
The chorus of the song becomes an ode to Dillus, where the band calls out his name and asks for beer, likening him to a mother without a breast. Whenever the band gets tired and worn out, Dillus is the one who looks bright and hurries them to their homes. The lyrics emphasize his helpful and empathetic nature, as he sits next to anyone with a sorrowful face and helps them forget their pain.
The song is a tribute to the unsung heroes of the music industry, the dedicated fans, who are often overlooked but play a major role in keeping the music alive. It highlights the mutual admiration and respect between the band and its fans, and emphasizes the importance of supporting each other.
