Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

Dream like a child
Of all the seasons
Pictures and fantasies
Moving on and on
In my mind
All the time
All the time
But the dreams are gone
Then reality is near
I take your hands
Feel your breath
And know that I
Won't stay alone anymore
I take your hands
Feel your breath
And know that I
Won't stay alone anymore
The lyrical content of Eloy's song "Inside" speaks to the experience of living in one's head, of being isolated in one's own thoughts, and of the desire to connect with others in order to break free of that isolation. The song begins with the singer describing their own tendency to "stay alone" and spend time in imaginative reverie, "dream[ing] like a child / of all the seasons / pictures and fantasies." While this inner world may be rich and appealing, it can also be isolating, and when the singer comes back to reality, they find themselves feeling alone and disconnected.
In the second verse, the singer describes the power of physical connection to break down the walls of isolation: "I take your hands / feel your breath / and know that I / won't stay alone anymore." While the song doesn't specify who the addressee of these words is, the implication is that it is a romantic partner - someone whose presence can anchor the singer in the physical world, and whose touch and breath can remind them of the reality of their own existence.
Taken as a whole, "Inside" is a meditation on the way we use our imagination to escape from the world around us, and the way that connection and touch can bring us back to reality in a positive way. In the song, the singer makes the decision to let go of their isolation, to reach out for that outside connection and embrace the reality of living in the world around them.

The best blind album purchase ever. I felt like I discovered gold. Up & Down is amazing. Like the Pink Floyd bus hit the Deep Purple bus in the Alps and Focus showed up in the ambulance
