Founded in 1969 by guitarist Frank Bornemann, the band has endured several line-up changes, with Bornemann being the only consistent member of the group. In the 1980s, after a series of major splits (like in 1984 although reformed in 1988) in the group, Bornemann pursued a more commercial direction. Despite attracting a large following, the band never gained popularity in the United States.
However, in later years, former members of the band re-joined, and in 1998 fans delighted in hearing Ocean 2, a return to the classic symphonic progressive genre that the band was so well known for. A sequel to the 1977's original, it is commonly thought among fans that it successfully recaptures the spirit of the band, and is a worthy follow-up to the much beloved classic.
Of the band's numerous records, fans generally consider Inside, Floating, Dawn, Ocean, Silent Cries & Mighty Echoes, Planets and Ocean 2 to be the superior albums.
Despite their nationality, the band is not generally considered krautrock due to their sound which has much more in common with English progressive groups such as Pink Floyd and Yes.
In 2009 after a decade of hiatus Frank Bornemann released a DVD celebrating their 40th anniversary and a new album called Visionairy.
In the following period he worked on a concept double album about the life of the Maid of Orleans, Jeanne d'Arc. The album The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 1 was released in 2017, followed by The Vision, the Sword and the Pyre, Pt. 2 in 2019.

On the way to see the new star
We forget the past time
Released from our imperfection
Molecular illusion
Going on to confuse our minds
Born in a world of conflicts
We don't recognize ourselves
We saw the sight
We saw the birth of a planet
We saw a world without sorrows
Without the eager
Far as of mind of money
We walking throught the land
Unrecognized we're back to the earth again
Creatures come from nowhere
And find somewhere our place
We want freedom
We want freedom for the world
Power to the people
And the righteous in the land
That's why we now in turn fight for them
We saw our world
Where life is around
We saw the people there
Living in the past
But they are happy
And then laughing
They feel like they're mice now
When they build the sky above
There's a lot of happiness
Walls of conflict going smash
I found the end of the dream
Listen here crashing down my mind
There reality is gray
With no hope and fame
I start a journey to inside waking my first term
I just returned to my dream where I'm coming from
The lyrics to Eloy's song Land Of Nobody touch on the themes of escaping reality, the search for a better world, and the idea of freedom. The song begins with the singer describing a journey to a new star, leaving behind the problems of the past and the imperfections of humanity. The idea of molecular illusion is introduced, possibly suggesting that reality itself is a construct that can be manipulated or transcended.
As the journey progresses, the singer and their companions come across a dying sun and witness the birth of a new planet, a world without sorrows or the eager pursuit of money. This utopian vision contrasts with the conflicts and struggles of the world they left behind. The lyrics then take a more political turn, with the mention of creatures finding their place and the desire for freedom and power to the people.
The singer sees people who are happy living in the past, and a journey begins to awaken something inside. The song ends with the line "I just returned to my dream where I'm coming from", suggesting that the journey may have been a metaphorical one, or that the search for a better world is ongoing and internal.
