Sandé made her singing career debut in 2009 after appearing on the track she wrote for Chipmunk's first debut single, "Diamond Rings". The single charted at No. 6 on the UK Singles Charts, making it Chipmunk and Sandé's first ever Top 10 Hit. She later appeared on another single singing guest vocals, after collaborating with Wiley on his comeback single "Never Be Your Woman", the single charted at number-eight on the UK Singles Charts becoming Sandé's second consecutive Top 10 Single.
Sandé decided against using the name Adele Sandé, due to Adele's growing success, so used her middle name instead. She revealed: "I changed it as soon as Adele came out. I just thought, 'You've kind of taken the [name] now', so I went with my middle name. She was just getting bigger and bigger, so I thought I just really need it."
A former medical student, Sandé appeared as a guest vocalist on Professor Green's 2011 UK #1 single Read All About It and soon went on to achieve her own chart success with her first solo release Heaven, which debuted in the UK Singles Chart at #2. Her debut album Our Version of Events was released on 12th February 2012. The album includes the singles Next To Me, Daddy and My Kind Of Love.
Before branching out on her own Sandé had already had a taste of chart success having collaborated with rapper Chipmunk on his song Diamond Rings, and then with Wiley on Never Be Your Woman. She has also written for or collaborated with artists including Let Go, Let It Rain, Susan Boyle and Cheryl Cole.
In a major feature in their Saturday Review paper, The Times declared Emeli Sandé "The Voice of 2012". The New York Times said “Ms. Sandé has a perspective-altering voice, clear and brassy and weapons-grade”. Fellow artists have also proclaimed their admiration, including Alicia Keys, “I just love her style and her flow – super raw.”, and Adele, "How incredible is she?".
Our Version of Events is the UK's biggest selling debut album of 2012.
Sandé appeared at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. She performed Abide with Me

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah oh, mm, yeah
How you got me holding on to roller coasters?
How you got me jumping outta airplanes?
How you got me feeling things
I'm not supposed to?
How you make my heart beat out my brain?
When you gonna let me get some sleep?
I can't believe, I can't believe you
Got me in so deep, so deep
Yeah, how the hell you pull me in so deep
So weak?
You're messing with my mental, yeah, so deep
So deep
I can't believe you got me in so deep
So deep
Deeper than the bottom of Pacific Ocean
Deeper than the sweetest dream I ever had
Ain't no point in holding on
To any rope 'cause
I don't think I'm ever gonna make it back
When you plan on giving me my pride back?
When you gonna give my heart some peace?
I can't believe, I can't believe you
Got me in so deep, so deep
Yeah, how the hell you pull me in so deep
So weak?
You're messing with my mental, yeah, so deep
So deep
I can't believe you got me in so deep
So deep
I saw you coming, so I built a boat
But the boat too heavy and
The boat won't float
So I jumped right into the submarine
But the windows cracked and
Your love rained in
I tried my best, my best to swim
But the wave's too strong and I couldn't win
So I hold my breath and I dive
Right in, I dive right in, i dive right in
I saw you coming so I build a boat
But the boat too heavy and
The boat won't float
So I jumped right in to the submarine
But the windows cracked and
Your love rained in
I tried my best, my best to swim
But the wave's too strong and I couldn't win
So I hold my breath and I dive
Right in, I dive right in, i dive right in
So deep, so deep
I can't believe you got me in so deep
So deep
You're messing with my mental, yeah, so deep
So deep
I can't believe you got me in so deep
So deep so deep, so deep
I can't believe you got me in so deep
So deep
You're messing with my mental, yeah, so deep
So deep
I can't believe you got me in so deep
So deep
Hey, oh-ho, oh-ho, hey
So deep, so deep, so deep
How you got me so deep, so deep, baby?
So deep, so deep, so deep
How you got me so deep
How you got me so deep?
So deep, so deep, so deep
How you got me so deep
How you got me so deep?
Da, da, da, so deep, so deep, so deep
How you got me so deep
How you got me so deep?
So deep, so deep, so deep
The lyrics to Emeli Sandé's song "Deep" express the emotional vulnerability and intensity of a romantic relationship. The lyrics speak of being completely immersed in love, to the point where it feels like a roller coaster ride, jumping out of airplanes, and feeling things one is not supposed to. The singer is confused and incredulous, questioning how the person they're involved with has such power over them, making their heart beat out of their brain. They long for a moment to catch their breath, to regain control and find peace within themselves. However, they are trapped in the deep, unable to escape the overwhelming emotions.
The second verse continues with the theme of being submerged and unable to resurface. It compares the depth of their feelings to the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean and the sweetest dream. The singer feels helpless, holding on to ropes that won't lead them back, and losing their sense of pride and peace. They have built various metaphorical vessels - a boat and a submarine - to protect themselves from the overwhelming love, but none of them are strong enough to withstand it. The imagery of cracked windows and rain symbolize the intrusion of this love into their safe spaces. Despite their effort to swim, they are defeated by the strength of the wave and are left with no choice but to dive right into the depths.
Overall, "Deep" explores the idea of being completely consumed by love, to the point where it becomes overwhelming and suffocating. The lyrics depict a struggle to maintain a sense of self and regain control while being deeply entangled in the dynamics of the relationship.
