Sandé made her singing career debut in 2009 after appearing on the track she wrote for Chipmunk's first debut single, "Diamond Rings". The single charted at No. 6 on the UK Singles Charts, making it Chipmunk and Sandé's first ever Top 10 Hit. She later appeared on another single singing guest vocals, after collaborating with Wiley on his comeback single "Never Be Your Woman", the single charted at number-eight on the UK Singles Charts becoming Sandé's second consecutive Top 10 Single.
Sandé decided against using the name Adele Sandé, due to Adele's growing success, so used her middle name instead. She revealed: "I changed it as soon as Adele came out. I just thought, 'You've kind of taken the [name] now', so I went with my middle name. She was just getting bigger and bigger, so I thought I just really need it."
A former medical student, Sandé appeared as a guest vocalist on Professor Green's 2011 UK #1 single Read All About It and soon went on to achieve her own chart success with her first solo release Heaven, which debuted in the UK Singles Chart at #2. Her debut album Our Version of Events was released on 12th February 2012. The album includes the singles Next To Me, Daddy and My Kind Of Love.
Before branching out on her own Sandé had already had a taste of chart success having collaborated with rapper Chipmunk on his song Diamond Rings, and then with Wiley on Never Be Your Woman. She has also written for or collaborated with artists including Let Go, Let It Rain, Susan Boyle and Cheryl Cole.
In a major feature in their Saturday Review paper, The Times declared Emeli Sandé "The Voice of 2012". The New York Times said “Ms. Sandé has a perspective-altering voice, clear and brassy and weapons-grade”. Fellow artists have also proclaimed their admiration, including Alicia Keys, “I just love her style and her flow – super raw.”, and Adele, "How incredible is she?".
Our Version of Events is the UK's biggest selling debut album of 2012.
Sandé appeared at the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. She performed Abide with Me

Let Her Go
Emeli Sandé Lyrics

If you can see me, then you're probably a little too close
So you think you could love me, well you gotta be stronger than most
'Cause my ex didn't like it, didn't like it,
No my friends they don't like it, they don't like it
Somebody remind me
When's the right time, when's the right time to let go
Tell me of the pleasures of being a normal citizen
'Cause all these fittins' and Vivians keeping me from fittin' in
Why do I feel safer on stage than in my own living room
My grandma say that if I leave my drink I shouldn't sip again
Ooh this tour has got me feeling tired like I'm itchin'
And uh even though it's physical differences and my siblings
That's why I feel so down even at the top of the Wimbledon
[Chorus]
Uh, dear whoever the fuck is witnessing
Disturbing London independent black businessmen
Based on the work and the effort I'm gonna give this year
Everybody's getting the presents they want for Christmas, yeah
Life is only ninety nine winters
So I'm tryna bond with daddy even though I don't like dinners
Don't be confused by my image, I'm no fuckin' public pin-up
But my heart won't let me say no to a picture
[Chorus]
Uh, dear whoever the fuck is, fuck it,
This is discovery hate it or love it
I'm now officially the property of the public since licensing my album
And signing a deal to be published
But none of these songs are written for me, nor am I a puppet
Journalists come for interviews but don't stay on the subject
Yeah, no, yeah, are we done yet?
Questions you've asked me hundreds, now can you grant me some rest
Because I'm tired of it, I'm living out my dream, and I'm tired from it
If music needed saving, I'd die for it
Music's where my heart is, I'm alive for it
I promise
I'm never liked my heart might break
Here in the dark, yeah, we'll be saved
I don't care, no looking back
I've never been, never been, this far from home
[Chorus]
When's the right time to let go
Emeli Sandé and Tinie Tempah's song Let Go examines the challenges that come with fame, success and public scrutiny. In the verses, the two artists express their thoughts about the difficulties of being a public figure and living up to expectations. For instance, Tinie Tempah talks about how he feels more comfortable on stage than in his own living room where he is not in control. He also discusses how difficult it is to maintain relationships with people who may not understand the limelight that comes with success. Similarly, Emeli Sandé speaks about the pressure of being in the public view and the demands it has on her.
The chorus then asks the question of when is the right time to let go, perhaps in reference to the pressures of being in the public eye. The track is a combination of Emeli Sandé's soulful voice, which is reminiscent of her earlier work, and Tinie Tempah's strong rap persona. Together, the two artists create a captivating sound that captures the emotions behind the lyrics.
Overall, Let Go is a commentary on what it means to be a public figure, the expectations that come with that, and the difficulties that arise from living in the spotlight. It is a reflection on the sacrifices artists have to make to achieve their dreams and the impact that success can have on their personal lives.
