Electric holiday
Whatever you say, but you don't speak for me
You don't speak for anyone
All hte paper fools downtown on hte corner
Killing the trampoline delay
I am not satisfied
The suburbs hide the one I love
The prophet's in New York
There's so little love in the things you've done
You're bringing down the rain
If I'm nothing to you now, that's the way I'd like to stay
I don't care for this air anymore
I'm leaving and you know what for
I will remember every word you said
Cutting edge
Breaking ground
Hey, whatever you've found
Waltzing up the hi-rise
Ordinary Jesus down at the record store
Will never say me name
I am not satisfied
At the way this burns me inside out
Moviemaker wonders why
I don't give in right here, right now
I will remember every single word you said to me
I do not see the same things you see
The lyrics of Emm Gryner's song "Good Riddance" convey a sense of disillusionment with the world around the singer. In the opening lines, she dismisses the urban atmosphere as a "holiday" and critiques those who claim to speak for her and others but fail to represent their concerns. She observes the "paper fools" on the corner and the destructive forces that threaten the peaceful "trampoline delay" in the city. But she also distances herself from these negative elements, declaring that she is "not satisfied" with the way things are.
The song's focus then turns to personal relationships, as the singer laments the loss of love in her life and the barriers that separate her from the one she loves. She sees herself as an outsider, caught between the empty promises of the city and the bland comforts of the suburbs. The mention of "the prophet's in New York" suggests a longing for something greater, a spiritual or artistic beacon to guide her. She then declares that she doesn't want to be anything to the person who has let her down, and that she is "leaving" the situation behind. Ultimately, she resolves to remember every word spoken to her and to see the world differently from the person who hurt her.
Overall, "Good Riddance" presents a somber but defiant perspective on life and love, resisting the easy answers and shallow pleasures of contemporary society. It is a song of disillusionment and resilience, of finding strength in the face of disappointment and adversity.
