The Good You Make

Sirens don't make it to Heysham
This time of year empty time of day
Drain away the maze OK
No one needs to say a word
Burn the M6 and forget the world
Nothing underneath the dark sky needs to
Pull you down or kill the sound of
It's a word you say
There are some times that you save me
It's a soundwave shape
It's a myth you break
There are some times that you save me
Digging down deep for the answers
Dropped my tears in the Cherwell
In the name of you and your whispering moves
And your point of view
No one needs to come around
I sang myself high back to town
Nothing underneath the dark sky needs to
Pull you down or kill the sound of
When the legion of plasticine men floods the sky
I hold on tight
You'll find me in one of your famous trees
It's all I need
The lyrics to Emm Gryner's "The Good You Make" are somewhat cryptic and open to interpretation. The song appears to be about finding solace and meaning amidst a chaotic and confusing world.
The first verse sets the scene with the line "hide up high by the landslide," suggesting a precarious and uncertain situation. The reference to Heysham, a small town in northern England, and the mention of the M6 motorway, place the song's setting in the UK. The phrase "empty time of day" suggests a lull in activity, a moment of reflection. The line "drain away the maze OK" could refer to the need to clear one's mind and escape the confusion of the world. The chorus, with its repetition of "the good you make," suggests that amidst all the chaos and confusion, there are still things that bring joy and meaning to life. The soundwave shape mentioned in the chorus could be a reference to the power of music and its ability to uplift and inspire.
The second verse continues the theme of searching for meaning and answers, with the image of "digging down deep." The reference to dropping tears in the Cherwell suggests a profound emotional experience, perhaps even a baptism of sorts. The line "in the name of you and your whispering moves and your point of view" could refer to a person or a higher power that brings guidance and purpose. The final lines of the song with the reference to plasticine men flooding the sky and the desire to hold on tight, suggest a moment of chaos and uncertainty, but ultimately a faith in something stable and grounding.
Overall, "The Good You Make" is a song about finding hope and meaning amidst the turmoil and confusion of life. It celebrates the power of music, human connection, and faith in guiding us through difficult times.
