Overall Meaning

The song "Semantics" by Endeavor is a scathing critique of American foreign policy and its impact on democracy around the world. The lyrics suggest that the definition of terror has been redefined by policies that claim to protect democracy but actually undermine it. The inflated defense budget, fueled by taxpayer dollars, is used to maintain an international machine that serves the interests of the United States. The talk of threats to freedom is used to justify social engineering that produces fear and approval for additional funding.

The School of the Americas, also known as the “school of the assassins,” trained and supplied individuals who were tasked with ensuring a market that would abide. US foreign aid recipients offer dictatorships to their people who are too terrified to fight for the democracies they have lost to market forces. The song suggests that the US has undermined democracies in multiple countries, including Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Iran, Guatemala, Haiti, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Greece, Indonesia, Uruguay, Cambodia, Honduras, Columbia and others all in the name of “democracy.”

The song also speaks to the idea that the new world order is not one that promotes democracy but instead perpetuates terror under the guise of security. Death squads are used to ensure security from prospective democracies, and as a result, the grip gets tighter. The humanitarian conscience dies amidst such constructive terror. The lyrics suggest that everyone must turn their head and hand over control to this new order, ensuring that the final result will leave the majority of the population powerless.
