The Very Thought Of You
Engelbert Humperdinck Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The little ordinary things that everyone ought to do
I'm living in a kind of daydream
I'm happy as a king
And foolish though it may seem
To me that's everything
The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love
The mere idea of you, the longing here for you
You'll never know how slow the moments go till I'm near to you
I see your face in every flower
Your eyes in stars above
It's just the thought of you
The very thought of you, my love
In "The Very Thought of You," Engelbert Humperdinck sings of the captivating and mesmerizing effect that his lover's mere thought has on him. He explains how his mind is consumed by thoughts of his lover, causing him to forget the little things that he ought to do, but he's happy in his state of daydreaming nonetheless. In this way, the song captures the profound impact that love can have on a person - it can blind them to reality, yet fulfill them so completely that everything else falls away.
The chorus reinforces the idea that the thought of his lover is all-consuming for Humperdinck. He sings that the mere idea of his lover and the yearning for her leads time to slow down to a crawl. Every flower reminds him of her face and every star brings to his mind her eyes. The song is suffused with a sense of longing and desire, emphasizing the powerful emotional impact that the mere thought of the one we love can have.
Overall, "The Very Thought of You" is a tender and heartfelt love song, highlighting how even the smallest thought of one's lover can have a profound impact on their life.
