These neon days are breaking
For we were left here in some love that got known
They starved to see us off
And some day we might know
How much they needed us to go
One last stop for bitter taste
Honestly you're in my wake
But you know that you're in my wake honey
My letters they return shorter than before
But to my weary soul it's good
Avoidance is an art I best learned from you
But when you change your mind I'm gone
One last stop for bitter taste
Honestly you're in my wake
I can't avoid this interstate
But you know that you're in my wake
One last stop for bitter taste
Honestly you're in my wake
I can't avoid this interstate
But you know that you're in my wake honey
The lyrics of Eric's song "In My Veins" paint a picture of two lovers who are on the brink of ending their tumultuous relationship. The singer urges his partner not to start a fight with him again. The neon days, which could symbolize the couple's passionate and colorful moments, are breaking, implying that their relationship is slowly fading away. The next line, "we were left here in some love that got known," suggests that their love might have been exploited by others for their own means, and now they are paying the price.
The third line, "they starved to see us off," could be interpreted as society or people who do not want them to be together. And someday, the couple might come to know how much these outsiders needed them to separate. The singer notes that his partner is in his wake and he cannot avoid the interstate, which could mean that he is not ready to let go of the relationship and wants to hold on to it. However, he leaves room for some bitterness as he mentions the "one last stop for bitter taste" in the chorus.
