In the mid-1960s Clapton left the Yardbirds to play with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed the power trio Cream with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and "arty, blues-based psychedelic pop". After Cream broke up, he formed blues rock band Blind Faith with Baker, Steve Winwood, and Ric Grech. Clapton's solo career began in the 1970s, where his work bore the influence of the mellow style of J. J. Cale and the reggae of Bob Marley. His version of Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" helped reggae reach a mass market. Two of his most popular recordings were "Layla", recorded with Derek and the Dominos; and Robert Johnson's "Crossroads", recorded with Cream. Following the death of his son Conor in 1991, Clapton's grief was expressed in the song "Tears in Heaven", which was featured on his Unplugged album.
Clapton has been the recipient of 18 Grammy Awards, and the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. In 2004 he was awarded a CBE at Buckingham Palace for services to music. He has received four Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. In his solo career, Clapton has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time. In 1998, Clapton, a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, founded the Crossroads Centre on Antigua, a medical facility for recovering substance abusers.
Comin' Home
Eric Clapton Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I want you so bad, I can hardly stand it.
I'm so tired and I'm all alone.
We'll soon be together and that's it;
I'm comin' home to your love.
Hitchhiking on the turnpike all day long.
Nobody seemed to notice, they just pass me on by.
Got a whole lot of loving and baby that's why
I'm comin' home to your love.
Coming home.
Coming home.
Coming home.
Coming home.
The lyrics to Eric Clapton's song "Comin' Home" express the feelings of a man who has been away from his loved one for too long. The man has been "out on the road 'bout six months too long," and he misses his partner dearly. He sings of his yearning for her love, admitting that he is "so tired and all alone." His situation may be exacerbated by the fact that he is hitchhiking on the turnpike all day long, feeling unnoticed and ignored by the world around him. However, he finds solace in his own ability to "sing [his] song" and keep himself from going "crazy." Despite all the obstacles, he is determined to make it back to his partner's love, as he repeats the refrain, "I'm comin' home to your love."
The song communicates the sense of longing and anticipation that can arise from being separated from a loved one. The man's journey home is not an easy one, as he faces many challenges on the road. Nevertheless, his focus remains fixed on his destination, as he eagerly awaits the moment when he can reunite with his beloved partner. The song is an expression of the human desire for connection and intimacy, no matter how difficult the circumstances may be.
