While doing an incredible job for NRK traveling around and reporting, he also raised money for a Norwegian coastal rescue service (redningsselskapet). He also started recording tunes he learned on his journeys around the country and the world. This resulted in many recordings . Erik Bye was voted to be the 3'd most important Norwegian citizen of all time in 2005. He died in 2004.
He will always be known for the humour and radiation of positive energy.

Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!
Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!
hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!
hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!
Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!
Hun seilte fra både "Hollender" og "Draug"
Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!
Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!
hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!
Stand by, gamle gutter, når klokken slår
Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!
Stand by, gamle gutter, med havsalt i hår
Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!
Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!
hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!
The song "Skomvaervalsen" by Erik Bye is an ode to the ship "Skomvær," named after the island of Skomvær in the Lofoten archipelago. The ship hailed from Porsgrunn and had sailed ten thousand nautical miles, weathering many storms and testing the mettle of its crew. The sailors nostalgically recall their time aboard the ship, where they weathered the worst of the weather with the ship's motto "Hal toppseil, my boys, hiv ho!" which roughly translates to "Half top sail, my boys, hoist her up!" ringing in their ears. The ship was at its best during strong southwesterly storms, when the sails were taut and the crew had to work together to keep the ship afloat. They reminisce about their comrades, some of whom may have lost their lives at sea, and vow to keep the memory of the "Skomvær" alive long after she's gone.
The lyrics offer a window into the life of a sailor, with their hardships and camaraderie, and captures the beauty and danger of seafaring. The mention of the ship's name, "Skomvær," and the call to "hiv ho!" has made the song a staple of Norwegian folk music and a symbol of the country's maritime heritage.
