Understanding
Escape Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Drag the knife across the skin
Tempted to succumb
Carving fervor into flesh
Holy we've become
Turning lips to everyone
Giving heart to none
Running backward erasing time
Seek the fire but never die
The cradle wipes blood red fresh
And through you, the host has chosen a name
The cradle wipes blood red fresh
And through you, the host has chosen a name
Call the name out
Call the name out
Call the name out
Call the name out
I'll never be like you
Late to my own funeral
I'll never be like you
Late to my own funeral
We'll never be so late like you to our funerals
I'll never be like you
Late to my own funeral
We'll never be so late like you to our funerals
Push decay inside me for then I can open all the passages into the world
Push decay inside me for then I can open all the passages to other worlds
Push decay inside me for then I can open all the passages into the world
Push decay inside me for then I can open all the passages to other worlds

Push decay inside me for then I can open all the passages into the world
Push decay inside me for then I can open all the passages to other worlds

Overall Meaning

The song "Understanding" by Escape features lyrics with dark and intense imagery that can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. The opening lines, "Drag the knife across the skin, Tempted to succumb, Carving fervor into flesh, Holy we've become," depict the act of self-harm and how it can almost become like a religious experience for those who struggle with it. The next few lines seem to comment on the futility of seeking love and companionship from others, "Turning lips to everyone, Giving heart to none." The line "Running backward erasing time" could speak to someone who is stuck in the past, trying to undo their mistakes.

The following lines, "Seek the fire but never die, The cradle wipes blood red fresh, And through you, the host has chosen a name," are extremely open to interpretation. It could be interpreted as a call to self-destruction, seeking a "fire" that will never consume the singer. "The cradle wipes blood red fresh" could refer to a dangerous situation that has just occurred, with the "host" choosing a name, hinting that something sinister may be at work.

The repetitive lines, "Call the name out, Call the name out" could be seen as a plea from the singer, asking someone or something to identify itself. The final lines, "Push decay inside me for then I can open all the passages into the world," are equally ambiguous. It could speak to a desire to let go of the past and embrace change, even if it involves embracing darkness.

Tamika and Tosha’s “I don’t mean to be demanding” and transitioning into Kandi’s high note was a epic!

@deonnadyson

Oh hunny my thoughts exactly. Yessssss Yessssss Yessssss beautiful to know someone feels this same exact thing

@carlwallace1129

@@nikkiegaza3446 they were a well oiled machine the way they flowed in that song and in the Who Can I Run To track on their Tracess of their Lipstick 3rd album. They really all Flowed. TAMIKA SCOTT really be holding the mid vocals together eventhough she could easily be the Lead vocalist if it wasn't for Kandi and their management
