Born and raised in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, she became a backup dancer for numerous famous musicians after moving to London at the age of 17, and made her own musical debut with EP1 (2012) and EP2 (2013).

Barnett's debut studio album, LP1 (2014), reached number 16 on the UK Albums Chart and number 30 on the US Billboard 200. It was also nominated for that year's Mercury Prize. She then released the EP M3LL155X (2015) and took a four-year hiatus, after which she released her second studio album, Magdalene (2019). After signing with Atlantic Records, she released the mixtape Caprisongs (2022). Her work has consistently garnered acclaim and has been described as "genre-bending", drawing on various genres including electronic music, trip hop, R&B, and avant-garde.

Shibari is a powerful statement. My favorite part about shibari are the marks on the body left from the rope. I admire her for the simple fact that she works her butt off. She writes her own lyrics, music and dance moves. She's 100% involved in everything that has her name on it, including her videos. She continues to try hard to improve her voice and performance so she can grow as an artist. But mostly I admire her because in the face of some of the most horrible cyber bullying I've witnessed, all because of who she's romantically involved with, she holds her head high, smiles and continues to work very hard to make her dreams come true. It's beautiful how her hair represents her heart. And, like a pendulum, she's suspended by it and it won't let her go. But she knows that the love she feels for the person is not mutual (not anymore, at least). So she tries to reach freedom from this feeling (by touching the water with her foot). Then she's not suspended anymore, which means that her heart knows the way to forget that person. I'm so sorry that happened to you. It is wonderful and inspiring that you were able to find solace in art and that you are remaining you, remaining strong and worthy as you were always meant to be and always have been. The way I’ve interpreted this song (with some slight help from the comments) is that the bondage at the start is meant to represent the entanglement she feels in her relationship. Honestly that can be very true with someone you’re with to where you form such a strong bond to them, however this doesn’t mean it’s always reciprocated. I noticed that the bonds are made with her hair and I couldn’t quite figure out why until someone in the comments said that it can be seen as a form of self confinement. Now I wouldn’t say it’s confinement but rather her hair represents the attachment that she herself made. You love someone so much it’s difficult for you to break away when you have formed those bonds.
Next we see the impressions of the rope and that a good amount of them have been broken. I think this is to show that she’s beginning to let go and break away from this person. The marks of the rope are the scares left behind from the pain and hurt of it all. However she is still not completely free which is why she is still tied up.
Then once it shows to where she has the poles out and the hair away from her, I think it’s meant to be the transition of finally taking the steps of leaving someone but still struggling to not get wrapped back into it again. Which again is very true for a toxic relationship that you are trying so hard to let go. It’s not the easiest and it can be very difficult to make sure you don’t fall back to where you were.
The silver liquid bit I take it literal in being consumed. When you’re so invest into someone you can easily lose yourself and be consumed with the emotions you have for this person. The lyric of asking them how they feel with them Constantly on her mind makes me think that this person KNOWS her pain but does not let her go for the simple fact that they enjoy the idea of knowing that someone is there for them. Manipulating her to stay with them which further supports my idea of her being bonded to them. It’s her hair which is her thoughts and emotions that can be manipulated in keeping her there.
Then the video ends with her hair no longer in braids and free. This I think represents her finally letting go and being herself again without the fear of constraint, and losing herself. However you do see a few braids left and I think they may represent the feelings that will always be there for that person. However you can notice that the braids no longer dominate her head. Again I think this is a very real way to depict toxic relationships in a way that you become so invested and focused on someone. To show that once you finally leave them, accept what had happened, and learned from it; there will forever still be some constraint that you have now formed to prevent yourself from going back. That or they show that even after everything, you will still love them but you will never go back. They are part of your past now and you can’t simply forget that it never happened.

I interpreted everything in this way because I feel like I can relate to the attachment you form in a toxic relationship and how difficult and heart breaking it can be to leave. You don’t want to go and you continue to lie to yourself that things will be better but then you have had enough. You begin to break away slowly. It’s a series of taking one step forward and two steps back but you will eventually find the strength and self worth to break free. You will forever have those feelings of love for that person but you have now learned to let go. You have found your identity again.

This song is not coming from a position of being invested in a relationship the other person doesn't want. They each want the other, but one communicates very verbally, and the other communicates in silent ways. The verbal one doesn't understand this kind of expression of love, and they want her to change how she voices her feelings. They are both very frustrated by this issue. They do not feel loved, because for them the love she is giving is not enough. They want her to vocalize it. But while she is trying, her efforts are not coming through enough. She just wants them to see her for who she is and accept her form of affection enough to know and feel that they are loved. Both.Bjork and FKA twigs are artist that use music to express their creativity. They use videos to make art and do things that people don't necessarily get . What people don't understand is that just because the music industry is filled with a bunch of artist doing the same thing and singing about the same stuff doesn't mean that there can't be a few artist that actually don't copy each other .people compare the two together because they are very alike in the the fact that they are artist . But they are very different artist in general. We need to stop comparing the two and appreciate that they both did and are doing shit that artist nowadays can't fathom doing . In my opinion right now we are experiencing a time in the music industry where it's hard to not repeat whats already been done or do things that sound similar. Right now everything in pop music sounds similar and there's not really much that is distinguishing from the crowd.

I think that FKA Twigs is the future of music and maybe her music doesn't seem to make sense but atleast it's 10x different then what Flo Rida and Maroon 5 are doing. Be into the things that resonate with you, not what other people think you should be into, and if your "friends" judge you for it, seek out better friends who don't need to surround themselves with mirrors to feel secure.

Unrelated but I have never seen an ugly person with a gap between their teeth. That is such a beautiful quality to have istg. I genuinely wish I had a gap rather than two overlapping bottom teeth.

If you're reading this and you're in a relationship with someone who doesn't love you back, let me tell you this. I been there and it's not worthy. No matter how hard you try to like them or how much you change yourself to please them. You can even lose your friends and stop talking to people, witch it's funny cause they won't do the same for you. Stop it. Don't do that to yourself, you can do better. There is a certain storyline in this video: She starts of by being tied up by her own hair. Then she is trying to prevent her hair from capturing her again: The sticks holding the braids away from her body. And at last, she is free of the braids and her movements are free as well. So it is a story of liberation.

I agree with antigua26. We should allow artists to exist in their own spheres of creativity. I hope she doesn't move into the mainstream solely because we will get an oversaturated market with people trying to replicate her. Katy Perry already did it with her look in This Is How We Do. I'd rather twigs stay relatively underground. Back to your main point though, I don't see why we need to pit artists against each other.

I love sharing her with friends. When their faces light up with wonder and awe I can't help but smile because she is truly a treasure. She skyrocketed from a mere interest on my list to my second favorite artist. I love how authentically talented and innovative she is. I would just hate for the market to become oversaturated with wannabe songs. The same thing happened when Lady Gaga brought electronic dance music back into the pop sphere with her debut album. Then everyone started doing electronic dance music. Pop radio is currently in an odd state... it's kind of between its last EDM phase and a slow-to-take-over minimalist pop music (e.g. Dark Horse, Black Widow, Beg For It, Lorde songs, etc.). Like I said, I just don't want the market saturated with bad remakes of twigs.

Korbin Jones that's the thing though she doesn't want to be just underground, she wants to be world known which really everyone does. Also Katy Perry was pop way before this is how we do. Also I agree I don't see why people try to pit others against each other as well I think we all know where she gets her unique style ideas from but she mixes it with her own thoughts and make sit hers. But everyone in the music business is doing their own thing that others like.
