Face to Face Lyrics

The lyrics of the song Best Defense by Face to Face describe a difficult conversation between two people who are clearly in a complicated relationship. The singer is pleading for the other person to listen to what they have to say, but their words seem to be falling on deaf ears. The other person is avoiding the confrontation and seems to be trying to push the singer away. They are acting as though there is nothing left to say, and that ignoring the issue would be the best way to solve the problem.
The singer recognizes that the other person is not interested in having an open and honest conversation, but they refuse to be silenced. The singer tells the other person that they cannot hide from their feelings for them, no matter how hard they try. The other person may be trying to convince themselves that they are doing the right thing by pushing the singer away, but the singer sees it differently. They believe that the other person is acting out of frustration and spite, and that they are not truly considering their own emotions.
In the end, the singer seems to resign themselves to the idea that it doesn't really matter where they believe they belong. It is clear that they are at a stalemate in their relationship, and neither one is willing to back down. The song explores the difficulty of communication and the challenges of building and maintaining a relationship when both parties are not on the same page.
Line by Line Meaning
you haven't heard a word of what i said
I feel like you're not really listening to me
i'd give anything to get inside your head
I wish I knew what was going on in your mind
you act as if there's nothing left to say
You seem like you've given up on our relationship
i guess everything is easier that way
It's easier to ignore our problems than confront them
i know that you don't want to think about it anyway
I understand that you don't want to face our issues
i won't let you hide from this
I'm not going to let you avoid our problems
even with your best defense
Even if you try to argue against it
you can't deny the way you feel about me
I know you still have feelings for me
i know you think about it all of time
I can tell that you're constantly thinking about us
but there's nothing left to make you change your mind
You've already made up your mind and nothing will change it
i know you think you're doing what is right
You believe that you're doing what's best for us
but you're acting on frustration out of spite
Your actions are fueled by anger and resentment
and i don't want to say another word to start a fight
I don't want to argue with you anymore
and if you're so convinced that we're so wrong
If you're certain that we're not right for each other
you're still standing here where you've been all along
You haven't left yet, so there must be some hope
it doesn't make much difference where we think that we belong
Ultimately, it doesn't matter where we think we should be, we just need to face our issues
