After releasing six studio albums, including best-selling records The Real Thing (1989) and Angel Dust (1992), Faith No More officially announced its breakup on April 20, 1998. The band has since reunited, conducting The Second Coming Tour between 2009 and 2010, and releasing its seventh studio album, Sol Invictus, in May 2015. After the touring cycle of Sol Invictus, Faith No More went on hiatus once again. In November 2019, the band announced that it would reunite to embark on a 2020 UK and European tour, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was postponed. Touring was due to recommence with a brief US tour in September 2021, followed by the previously postponed UK and Europe dates in June 2022, but all tour dates were cancelled with Patton citing mental health reasons.

Faith No More Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But now you're on the other side and there's no way
To feel your breath of life upon my face
Cause with the state you're in there wouldn't be a trace
Now I wake up every night with this emptiness inside
Hasn't been the same since you quit the human race, left without a trace
Quit the human race, did you? Camina con la muerte?
Ashes ashes, we all fall down
Now I wake up every night with this emptiness inside me
Hasn't been the same since you quit the human race, left without a trace
Death march baby
The lyrics of Faith No More's "Death March" speak of the singer's longing to be reunited with someone who has left the earthly realm, presumably due to death. The opening lines express a desire to "let you in," but the subject is now "on the other side." The singer laments the inability to feel this person's "breath of life" and notes that, given their current state, there wouldn't be a trace left if they were to return. The chorus repeats the line "Hasn't been the same since you quit the human race, left without a trace," emphasizing the lasting impact of this loss.
The reference to the nursery rhyme "Ring Around the Rosie" in the second verse further emphasizes the theme of death, as the rhyme is often associated with the Black Death. The line "pocket full of posies" is thought to refer to the practice of carrying flowers to ward off the smell of disease, and "ashes ashes, we all fall down" may refer to the aftermath of the plague. This imagery reinforces the overall mood of the song, which is melancholic and elegiac.
Overall, "Death March" is a song that speaks to the pain of grief and the longing for connection with those who have passed on. The lyrics are poignant and emotionally charged, conveying a sense of loss that is universal.
