After releasing six studio albums, including best-selling records The Real Thing (1989) and Angel Dust (1992), Faith No More officially announced its breakup on April 20, 1998. The band has since reunited, conducting The Second Coming Tour between 2009 and 2010, and releasing its seventh studio album, Sol Invictus, in May 2015. After the touring cycle of Sol Invictus, Faith No More went on hiatus once again. In November 2019, the band announced that it would reunite to embark on a 2020 UK and European tour, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was postponed. Touring was due to recommence with a brief US tour in September 2021, followed by the previously postponed UK and Europe dates in June 2022, but all tour dates were cancelled with Patton citing mental health reasons.

Faith No More Lyrics

It took this long just to get ahead, he says
He knows for sure but that he can't decide
Between his decency and this matter of pride
So he's growin' up on time, he's growin' up in the middle
Said he's growin' up on time, he's growin' up in the middle
Get down, growin' up on time, growin' up in the middle
And it burns and it burns, the sun burns and it burns
Oh, now I can really feel it, how could you ever stand it
We've got the same ideas, we got the same old fears
There are different colors sometimes, but hey, who cares
It's just years that shears, that shears our lives apart
Yeah, like the time you tried to teach your nephew to fart
He couldn't do it, push so he's growin' up in the middle
Said he's growin' up on time, their growin' up in the middle
I'm growin' up on time, I'm growin' up in the middle
Said I'm growin' up on time, hey, guess what?
Oh, now I can really feel it, how could you ever stand it
I'm not the kind of person who would say it, if it wasn't the truth
And then you go and tell a friend that
Her heart's on fire and it has no meaning
Well, now and only now I know the difference
When you tell me that there ain't no difference
So I'm growin' up on time, I'm growin' up in the middle
Said I'm growin' up on time, I'm growin' up in the middle
I'm growin' up on time, I'm growin' up
Now's the time to evaluate between
The love you give and the love that you take
It's not a matter of opinion when it comes down to it
It's just a difference of opinion, that much I can take
So I'm growin' up on time, I'm growin' up in the middle
Said she's growin' up on time, she's growin' up in the middle
So they're growin' up on time, they're growin' up in the middle
I'm growin' up on time, I'm growin' up in between
And it burns and it burns and it burns
And it burns, the sun burns and it burns
And it burns and it burns
The lyrics of Faith No More's song R N' R are full of contradiction and confusion. The main character seems to be struggling with the choices he has made, and the decisions he wishes he had made. He is torn between his sense of decency and his pride, and he cannot seem to choose which one to follow. The song talks about growing up and trying to figure things out, but it also speaks to the pain and frustration that sometimes comes with that process.
The lyrics also seem to touch on the idea that people may have similar fears and ideas, but that they often dismiss each other because of perceived differences. The line "there are different colors sometimes, but hey, who cares" suggests that these supposed differences do not really matter in the grand scheme of things. The song also mentions the difficulty of communicating effectively with others, as evidenced by the failed attempt to teach a nephew to fart.
Overall, "R N' R" is a song about the ups and downs of growing up and trying to figure things out. It touches on the struggle to choose between conflicting values, the frustration of miscommunicating with loved ones, and the idea that we are all more similar than we may realize.
