"Goodnight Irene" is a classic blues and folk song, originally written by Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter in the 1930s. Fats Domino's version adds his signature rock and roll flavor to the song, giving it a unique twist. The lyrics speak of various elements of the singer's life and emotions.
The first verse highlights the singer's wedding, stating that he and his wife have settled down. However, they are now separated, and the singer expresses his intention to take a stroll down in town. This could represent a desire to escape or find solace in the bustling city life, away from the troubles in his marriage.
In the chorus, the singer bids farewell to Irene, wishing her a goodnight and referring to the possibility of meeting her in his dreams. This can be interpreted as a wistful longing for the past or a fantasy of a different life and relationship.
The second verse introduces a contrast between living in the country and downtown. The singer reveals his inclination to occasionally have impulsive thoughts, such as jumping in the river and drowning. This suggests a potential desire for escapism due to the challenges and conflicts he might be facing.
The third verse takes a different turn, as the singer advises others to stop gambling, rambling, and staying out late at night. He encourages them to prioritize their families and spend time by the fireside, symbolizing the warmth and comfort of home life.

The version my family sings
(Chorus)
Last Saturday night I got married
Me and my wife settled down
Now me and my wife are parted
I’m gonna take another stroll downtown
(Chorus)
Sometimes I see her in the morning
Sometimes just late at night
Whenever I see that face of hers
I wish I was the one that died
(Chorus)
She left her - little namesake
When she up and went goodbye
And she’s the only thing I have
That’s keeping me alive
(Chorus; first bit singing up to the mom, then the quiet part to the baby)

Irene, goodnight. Irene, goodnight
Goodnight, Irene. Goodnight, Irene
I'll see you in my dreams
Last Saturday night I got married
Me and my wife settled down
Now, me and my wife are parted
I'm gonna take a little stroll downtown
But Irene, goodnight. Irene, goodnight
Goodnight, Irene. Goodnight, Irene
I'll see you in my dreams
Sometimes I live in the country
And sometimes I live in town
Sometimes I take a great notion
To jump into the river and drown
But Irene, goodnight. Irene, goodnight
Goodnight, Irene. Goodnight, Irene
I'll see you in my dreams
Stop ramblin'. Stop your gamblin'
Stop staying out late at night
Go home to your wife and family
Stay there by the fireside, bright
But Irene, goodnight. Irene, goodnight
Goodnight, Irene. Goodnight, Irene
I'll see you in my dreams

There are some other verses floating around, including these sung by Leadbelly..
"I asked your mother for you
She told me that you was too young
I wish dear Lord that I'd never seen your face
I'm sorry you ever were born"
"I love Irene, God knows I do
I love her 'til the sea runs dry
If Irene turns her back on me
I'm gonna take morphine and die"

Sometimes she sleeps in a gown,
But when they’re both in the laundry,

I lost my Dad in 1997 at the young age of 59. I was only 21. I remember in the house I grew up in. My Dad used to play and sing to this song. I'm 45 now and I will never get tired of hearing this song. Because it keeps my Dad close to my heart.
