It's A Sin To Tel A Lie
Fats Waller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Be sure it's true when you say "I love you"
It's a sin to tell a lie
Millions of heart have been broken
Just because these words were spoken

I love you, yes I do, I love you
If you break my heart I'll die
So be sure it's true when you say "I love you"
It's a sin to tell a lie

Now, ya better be sure that it's true when you say "I love ya."
Honey chile, don'tcha know it's a sin to tell a lie? Whole lotta hearts have been
broken. Ya know why they were broken? Just for these foolish little words that
were spoken. Ya know what they were? "I love ya, I love ya." Darlin', ya know
doggone well I LUV ya and if ya break my heart I've GOT to die. So ya better be
sure that it's true when you come runnin' up here sayin' "I love ya" 'cause it's a sin
to tell a lie.

I love you, yes I do, I love you
If you break my heart I'll die

So be sure it's true when you say "I love you"
It's a sin to tell a lie

Overall Meaning

Fats Waller's song "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie" is a warning against professing love insincerely. The song reminds us that millions of hearts have been broken by those who claimed to love them but did not mean it. Waller admonishes his listeners to be absolutely certain that they are in love before they utter those three little words, "I love you." He warns that saying those words when you don't mean them is a sin.

The song's narrator speaks directly to his lover, telling her that she must be sure that her love is genuine before she professes it. He tells her that his heart will be broken if his lover does not truly love him. He passionately declares, "I love you, yes I do, I love you. If you break my heart, I'll die." His words are a plea for his lover's sincerity and a warning of the danger in pretending to love someone.

"It's A Sin To Tell A Lie" is a timeless song that reminds us of the importance of honesty and integrity, especially in matters of love. It serves as a warning to those who would trifle with another person's heart and a reminder to cherish the love of those who truly love us.

A thrilling jazz side. Fats allows his outstanding sidemen to shine during their solos (clarinet, trumpet), all the while driving things ever-forward with his arresting vocal choruses and, especially, that mighty left hand: little wonder that his group was billed as "Fats Waller and his Rhythm."

Jacob Zimmermann

He was the King of Swing before swing was even a thing.

Mighty Mystery

I remember when I first heard this on the radio, when a local station was playing music from the World War era. My father heard this and turned it up. We both laughed at the "jaw" line. He was a child when Fats did this. A generation later, I was enjoying it, too. Music defines each generation, but defining music links generations.
It's like my father is still here, and I can join him in laughter again.
Thanks, Fats.

nunca había escuchado está música pero me parece maravillosa

Insuperable and unique. It's so sad that he died so young because he could give so much to music and to the future generations. He died so young like Mozart and Russ Columbo and I think that this is the genuine and authentic jazz and not the jazz nowadays that it became a mixture of other modern rhythms and therefore it lost completely its original purity and authenticity.
