Originally from Connecticut, Fay Wolf is an L.A.-based singer-songwriter who refers to her live performances as “sadsongfunnyjokemusictimes.” On their own, her songs beg comparisons to Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell and Ani Difranco.
In 2009, Fay Wolf released Blankets, her debut EP. Following the release, Fay’s music spread via word-of-mouth, and fans regularly gather to see her perform at venues like Hotel Café in Los Angeles and The Living Room in New York City. In addition to her grassroots success, Fay’s music has also been featured in the hit shows Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, Covert Affairs, and Pretty Little Liars. Her cover of The Outfield's "Your Love" was released exclusively on the Pretty Little Liars Television Soundtrack in February 2011.
Thanks to a very successful Kickstarter campaign, Spiders, Fay's first full-length album, was released on November 8, 2011.
Fay Wolf is more than just a singer, songwriter, pianist, and de facto stand-up comic. She is a classically-trained actress too, with a BFA from Boston University. Her recent acting accomplishments include work in theatre, film, and guest appearances on 2 Broke Girl$, Children's Hospital, Miami Medical, Numb3rs, Bones, Ghost Whisperer and NCIS: Los Angeles. Luckily, no matter how many roles Fay takes on, nothing is neglected; Fay is also a professional organizer who has her own company called ‘New Order’, named after the band.

How do you get away
How do you see if the cracks in the plan
Are the reasons that you play the game
Why do you think you know where we stand
And how do i get away
You’re taking the menu right to the fan
And the what is and the what is
In the way
And the what is and the what is
In the way
When is the right time to draw the marker line?
When i cry?
How fucked up is that
When will i behave
Relative to change
Relative to pain
And the what is and the what is
In the way
And the what is and the what is
In the way
How did we fall in love in a week
And how do we get away
How do we see if the cracks in the
Plan
Are the reasons that we play the game
And the what is and the what is
And the what is and the what is
And the what is and the what is
In the way
If all’s not fair then why are you here
The lyrics of Fay Wolf's song "In the Way" delve into the complexities and uncertainties of love and relationships. The singer raises a series of questions about how love can develop so quickly ("How do you fall in love in a week?") and how people can escape from the entanglements that come with it ("How do you get away?"). The cracks in their plans and expectations become the very reasons they continue playing the game of love.
The singer also expresses confusion about the other person's assumptions regarding their relationship ("Why do you think you know where we stand?") and desires some distance to think and reflect ("How do I get away?"). The line about taking the menu right to the fan suggests that choices and decisions are being forced upon them, leaving them without much say in the matter.
In the chorus, the phrase "the what is and the what is in the way" implies that there are obstacles or unresolved issues preventing the progress or clarity in the relationship. The questions continue with a theme of uncertainty as to when it's appropriate to establish boundaries and express emotions ("When is the right time to draw the marker line? When I cry? How fucked up is that? When will I behave relative to change? Relative to pain?").
Ultimately, the singer reflects on the speed at which their love developed and questions if their relationship can withstand the challenges that arise ("How did we fall in love in a week?"). The repeated phrase "the what is and the what is in the way" emphasizes the obstructions that hinder their understanding of each other and the future of their relationship. The final statement, "If all's not fair then why are you here," suggests the singer's confusion and potential dissatisfaction with the other person's presence despite the unfairness they perceive in the relationship.
