Orig… Read Full Bio ↴Fay Wolf will make you cry. And it’ll feel really really good.
Originally from Connecticut, Fay Wolf is an L.A.-based singer-songwriter who refers to her live performances as “sadsongfunnyjokemusictimes.” On their own, her songs beg comparisons to Tori Amos, Joni Mitchell and Ani Difranco.
In 2009, Fay Wolf released Blankets, her debut EP. Following the release, Fay’s music spread via word-of-mouth, and fans regularly gather to see her perform at venues like Hotel Café in Los Angeles and The Living Room in New York City. In addition to her grassroots success, Fay’s music has also been featured in the hit shows Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, Covert Affairs, and Pretty Little Liars. Her cover of The Outfield's "Your Love" was released exclusively on the Pretty Little Liars Television Soundtrack in February 2011.
Thanks to a very successful Kickstarter campaign, Spiders, Fay's first full-length album, was released on November 8, 2011.
Fay Wolf is more than just a singer, songwriter, pianist, and de facto stand-up comic. She is a classically-trained actress too, with a BFA from Boston University. Her recent acting accomplishments include work in theatre, film, and guest appearances on 2 Broke Girl$, Children's Hospital, Miami Medical, Numb3rs, Bones, Ghost Whisperer and NCIS: Los Angeles. Luckily, no matter how many roles Fay takes on, nothing is neglected; Fay is also a professional organizer who has her own company called ‘New Order’, named after the band.

Was
Fay Wolf Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I was
Or was that me
Or was
And when a bottle top
Makes a final shot
It’s time to say the is
The is of the was
Of the is of the was
Of the not
Of the maybe
Maybe when we’re forty
Which ain’t too far to plot
I’s raised to lose
I’s raised
It came to you
To break
‘cause when a bottle top
Makes the final shot
It’s time to say the is
The is
The is of the was
Of the is of the was
Of the not
Of the maybe
Maybe when we’re forty
Which ain’t too far to plot
I can’t help but look at the shape of your face
Stare at your shinbones freckles on yer arm
And think that 1980 was a really good year
For shapes
And faces
And shinbones
And freckles on arms
While i was in the bathroom
You was at the mall
Before we even met
It’s funny how things get
Fucked up so fast
‘cause when a bottle top
Makes the final final final final final shot
It’s time it’s time to say
It’s time it’s time it’s time it’s time it’s time
The is of the was
Of the is of the was
Of the not
Of the maybe
Maybe when we’re eighty
Which ain’t too far
These lyrics by Fay Wolf convey a sense of confusion, introspection, and the passage of time in a relationship.
In the first verse, the repetition of "I was" suggests a reflection on the singer's identity within the relationship. They question whether their role in the relationship was genuine or if they lost themselves in it. There is uncertainty about who they truly were.
The mention of a "bottle top" making a "final shot" suggests that a significant event or action has occurred that signals the end of something. It could symbolize the breaking point or the moment when the relationship reaches its conclusion. This event prompts the need to acknowledge and confront what "is" in the present moment.
"The is of the was" refers to examining the nature of what existed before, the reminiscing of what was in the relationship. The repetition emphasizes the ongoing evaluation and attempt to make sense of the past. There is also a mention of the "not" and the "maybe," suggesting the presence of uncertainty and unanswered questions about the relationship.
The line "maybe when we're forty, which ain't too far to plot" suggests a hope or expectation that clarity or resolution might come with time. This reflects the idea that as individuals mature and gain more life experience, they may be able to understand or make peace with the past.
In the second verse, the repetition of "I's raised" suggests a sense of being nurtured or shaped by the relationship. However, the following line implies that the other person in the relationship was responsible for breaking or damaging the singer. It implies a sense of vulnerability and betrayal.
The repeated mention of the bottle top making the "final shot" reiterates the significance of a decisive event or action leading to the end of the relationship. The need to acknowledge the present comes to the forefront again.
The third verse shifts the focus to the physical presence of the other person. The singer acknowledges their admiration of the other's physical attributes, such as the shape of their face, shinbones, and freckles. This suggests a sense of fondness and nostalgia for the early stages of the relationship.
The line "while I was in the bathroom, you was at the mall" suggests a disconnect or missed connection between the singer and the other person in terms of their actions and life trajectories. It highlights the irony and unpredictability of how relationships can change and diverge.
The repetition of "final" in the line about the bottle top represents the sense of finality and closure that is imminent. It emphasizes the urgency to confront and accept what is happening in the relationship.
The final repetition of "The is of the was" reinforces the ongoing reflection and evaluation of the past. The mention of being eighty in the future suggests the continuing search for understanding and peace, even in old age. The phrase "which ain't too far" hints at the idea that time passes quickly, urging the need for resolution and acceptance before it's too late.
