Drones
Fear Factory Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You waste away
A spinning cage
Mass blinded by the sun

You spend your day
Stuck in a race
And life has just begun
A paradise is in eclipse
And lives are lost
And for distress

The wage of sin is money spent
Your life a debt full of regret

We are lost in the maze
Falling
Falling...

And now your life
Amounts to nothing
A fortune has a price

Cause in the end
All humans die
A debt your in the hide

A paradise is in eclipse
And lives are lost
And for distress

The wage of sin is memory spent
Your life a debt full of regret

We are lost in the maze
Falling
Falling....

Falling away again...

(Get! Up!)

Lost in the maze
Falling
Falling...

Falling away again...

Overall Meaning

The song "Drones" by Fear Factory reflects on human existence in contemporary times. The chorus emphasizes the feeling of being lost in a maze and falling while the verses give a vivid picture of being trapped in a cycle of work and desperation. The lyrics in the first verse describe a life that is like a spinning cage, where one is stuck in a race without any chance of escape. The line "mass blinded by the sun" symbolizes the overwhelming nature of modern-day civilization, where people are not free to experience true joy but are only given a brief glimpse of it.

The second verse sheds light on the consequences of living such a life, where the "wage of sin is money spent" and one's life is left with nothing but regret. The chorus repeats this idea of being lost in a maze, with the second "falling" serving as a powerful metaphor for the inevitability of our mortality. The final lines of the song imply that in the end, our lives amount to nothing and that the only enduring legacy is the debt we leave behind.

Overall, "Drones" is a song that highlights the darker side of modern existence and encourages us to question the values and beliefs that we have come to accept as normal.

So many things I love about this band, they are heavy as hell, and can break even the strongest man to his knees with melodies. FF always will be my favorite band.

Reuben Alvear

I hear ya, Pete Lehner. Burton C. Bell has great clean vocals. I saw FF
live 3x, incl once in San Antonio, TX in 1999 when they were on OzzFest.
Slipknot, System Of A Down, Deftones, Slayer, Rob Zombie, Black f****n'
Sabbath! I suppose as a 21-year old there would have been worse ways
to spend a Sunday ;-D \m/

"Archetype" is easily one FF's best albums within a solid back catalogue ("Transgression" aside haha). This album really made it possible for the band and their legacy to continue on pretty much in tact when it could have so easily fell apart after Dino left.

Tyler Felland

@Deacon you can't stream it because Dino owns the rights to Fear Factory and he wasn't present when this album and Transgression were written. It was a very unfortunate situation that led to a huge legal battle.

Deacon Gowan

I didn’t know Dino left. Any idea why you can’t stream this album on Spotify. This opening drumbeat is one of the best Raymond put out. He is my favorite drummer ever. I’d love to see a band with Raymond playing drums, Les Claypool on bass, Zakk Wylde guitar, and Tyler Shelton as frontman.
