High
Feeder Lyrics

Guess I'm stuck in a dream
Surrounded by coloured leaves on the ground
As I stare at the trees
I see one fall down on my hand
As I start to explore
I can't ignore a man
He turns his head around
His face was all worn by the sun

I'm going out for a while
So I can get high with my friends
I will
I'm going out for a while
Don't wait up 'cause I won't be home
Today

Drifting down a road
Losing myself in a dream
Feel my hands getting cold
Sat in a boat on a lake

I'm going out for a while
So I can get high with my friends
I will
I'm going out for a while
Don't wait up 'cause I won't be home
Today

Climbing up trying my best
As I sink
Climbing up trying my best
As I sink again

Lying back on the floor
Reaching up high into space
See myself in a glass
I'm counting the lines on my face
Again
Counting the lines on my face
Again

I'm going out for a while
So I can get high with my friends
I will
I'm going out for a while
Don't wait up 'cause I won't be home
Today

I'm going out for a while
So I can get high with my friends
I will
I'm going out for a while
Don't wait up 'cause I won't be home
Today

Today, today, today, today

Overall Meaning

In Feeder's song "High," the lyrics depict the singer as being stuck in a dream, surrounded by colored leaves and trees, as he explores his surroundings. He sees a man with a worn face before drifting down a road and losing himself in his own dream. As he sinks, he tries to climb up but sinks again. In the end, he sees himself in a glass and counts the lines on his face.

The lyrics of "High" are written in a way that suggests the singer feels lost or stuck in a dreamlike state. The surrounding imagery of leaves and trees also feels like he is surrounded by the natural beauty of life but still feels like he cannot escape his dreamworld. The man with the worn face could symbolize the singer's awareness of the passing of time, and that he is trying to escape his reality by getting high with his friends.

Throughout the song, there is the recurring theme of the singer trying to climb up but sinking down again. This could symbolize his attempts to escape his reality by getting high, but ultimately he falls back down into it. The ending of the song, where he sees himself in a glass and counts the lines on his face, suggests that he is trying to come to terms with reality and himself in a sober state.

Summer of '97. Just graduated high school with the rest of my life right in front of me. Endless possibilities. The world seemed huge. My friend just bought a house. No parents around. We partied hard all summer long. Lots of drinking. Lots of drugs. Lots of girls. We thought we were invincible. So many nights we broke out the acoustics and jammed to this song. Life was so simple. Life was so good. We all went off to college or found real jobs after that summer and went out separate ways. I miss those times. I miss that era. This song brings me back to that summer every time I hear it.

Summer of 97' I was entering as a freshman..but the music...the fun, the freedom was overwhelmingly pure. Fuckin music was the shit...it was a time of a lifetime. People who shared that time with me...WE ARE LUCKY!!! Nobody will ever understand...and i could give a fuck! We do! And it will never fade.

Fellow mid life criseser!

Lol. The rubbish people spout. "Endless possibilities", then settles into the all too predictable one summer of drink, drugs and sex. So ludicrous, so funny.
