The pervasive ignorance and unwillingness to see the truth that plagues the people of Lagos, Nigeria, particularly those living in the wealthy Ikoyi neighborhood.

This is a tale that needs to be told.


Ikoyi blindness
Metaphorical blindness that prevents the residents of Ikoyi, a wealthy neighborhood in Lagos, from recognizing the social realities and inequalities that exist outside of their bubble.


All of us wey dey inside Lagos
All of us who are living inside Lagos.


We think say we dey wise
We believe that we are wise and knowledgeable.


But we no know anything
In reality, we know very little and are ignorant to the social issues and struggles faced by those outside our immediate lives.


I say nobody wan open eyes
Fela reiterates that no one wants to open their eyes and see the social struggles plaguing the community.


Wetin dey happen for backroad
What's happening in the less privileged and remote areas of the community.


We no dey hear anything
We are not informed about the struggles that exist in these areas due to our societal separation and ignorance.


Only for some corner for Ikoyi
These struggles are only acknowledged in some isolated corners of the wealthy Ikoyi neighborhood.


Na there some people dey fight o
Only there do some people begin to fight for social justice and equality.


For us we dey flex and laugh o
Meanwhile, we live our lives, unconcerned and ignorant of the plights of those around us, choosing to enjoy our pleasures instead.

Fela reiterates that still, no one wants to open their eyes and see the prevalent struggles and challenges in the society.

However, some people begin to fight for social justice and equality within these isolated pockets of privilege.


For us we dey flex and laugh o
While these people fight for social justice and equality, we continue to choose to indulge in our pleasures instead.
