I Support Same Sex Marriage
Fireworks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're a classic case of,
"Look around, It's obvious!"
But further down your arm from that bracelet on your wrist
Your armpit's getting sore from that crutch that you've been living with

You want to love him but you don't know how
I can live with I don't know how
When you open that book you close your mind

Trust yourself and no one else
Before something else

When you spend all your time with your eyes to the sky
You end up looking down your nose just to look me in the eye

I see you handing out a pocket sized version of ten rules
Just over the property line of your high school

You're filling a dark room with hopes that no one will see
To turn on a light you have to get up off your knees
So get up off your knees

You always bring me down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Fireworks's song I Support Same Sex Marriage speak to the struggle of accepting and supporting the LGBTQ+ community in a world where discrimination and bigotry are still widespread. The first line "You're a classic case of, 'Look around, It's obvious!'" references the fact that people often say that it's obvious when someone is gay or lesbian, but then struggle to accept them for who they are. The line "Your armpit's getting sore from that crutch that you've been living with" suggests that the person is relying too heavily on their beliefs and prejudices instead of opening their minds and hearts to new perspectives.

The song also touches on the struggle to show love to someone when you don't know how. The line "You want to love him but you don't know how" speaks to the struggle of accepting someone for who they are when it goes against what society has taught you. The line "When you open that book you close your mind" suggests that people rely too heavily on religious texts and their interpretations, instead of thinking for themselves.

The chorus of the song encourages people to trust themselves and not listen to what others say or what societal norms dictate. The line "When you spend all your time with your eyes to the sky, you end up looking down your nose just to look me in the eye" speaks to the idea that people who are quick to judge and condemn others can often end up being hypocritical and self-righteous.

Overall, the song speaks to the struggle of acceptance and the importance of thinking for yourself instead of blindly following societal norms.

Your outwardly displayed support for social justice and equal rights may appear genuine but your lack of vocal support shows that it is actually more of an inconvenience for you.

You want to love him but you don't know how, I can live with I don't know how, When you open that book you close your mind
You may be struggling with your own beliefs or lack of understanding towards same-sex relationships and you cannot admit that to yourself. You refuse to learn and grow intellectually in that direction.

When you spend all your time with your eyes to the sky, You end up looking down your nose just to look me in the eye

You're filling a dark room with hopes that no one will see, To turn on a light you have to get up off your knees, So get up off your knees
You have ideals that are unpopular and maybe even bigoted, but you hope to keep them hidden and avoid scrutiny. If you want to make a difference and create genuine positivity, you need to be brave and stand up for what you believe in, even if it's unpopular.

You always bring me down
Your lack of support for the LGBTQ+ community and same-sex marriage is disheartening and negatively impacts those who are fighting for their rights and recognition.

@HowISeeItToday i think opposing homosexuality is a personal view and not exactly one of the church. also people need to quit hiding behind the bible to express their own personal thoughts and trying to find a page in the bible to say that someone else's beliefs and lifestyle is wrong

@miguelkpeters

ACTUALLY, marriage is an institution of almost EVERY religion. It's been around long before Christianity, so to claim it's something only to Christians, is absolutely ludicrous and narrow minded.
