A Gentleman
Fish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you still keep paper flowers in the bottom drawer with your belgian lace
Taking them out every year to watch the colors fade away?
Do you still believe in fairy tales, in battlements of shining castles
Safe from the dragons that lie beneath the hill?
Are you still a russian princess rescued by a gypsy dancer
To anyone who'll listen is that a story you tell?
You live a life of fantasy, your diary romantic fiction.
Can't you see it's hard for me, can you see what I am trying to say?
It's a gentleman's excuse me so I'll take on step to the side.
Can you get it in your head I'm tired of dancing?
For every one step forward we're taking two steps back.
Can you get it in your head I'm tired of dancing?

I know you still like old fashioned waltzes
Your reflection in the mirror that you flirt with as you glide across the floor
But if I told you the music's over would you want to hear
That your dance card is empty that there's no-one really there?
Do you still believe in santa claus, that there's a millionaire
Looking at your front door with a key to a life that you'd never understand?
All I have to offer is the love that I have, it's freely given
You'll see it's value when you see what I've tried to say.

It's a gentleman's excuse me so I'll take on step to the side.
Can you get it in your head I'm tired of dancing?
For every one step forward I'm taking two steps back.
Can you get it in your head that from this one step forward
There's no turning back?

Can you get it in your head I'm tired of dancing?
We're finished dancing.

Overall Meaning

In Fish's song "A Gentleman's Excuse Me", the singer is trying to express his frustration with his partner who lives in a world of fantasy, where she still keeps paper flowers and believes in fairy tales. He is tired of dancing around the issue and wants to tell her that their relationship is not progressing. He asks if she still believes in Santa Claus and fantasizes about a millionaire coming to her door, unaware of the love he has to offer. He uses the phrase "a gentleman's excuse me" to politely step aside from the fantasy they are living in and end their relationship.

The lyrics convey a sense of unrequited love and frustration with someone who lives in a romanticized world that is not grounded in reality. The singer is trying to break through to his partner and tell her that he is tired of dancing around the issue and wants to move forward. He is offering her real love and is hoping she will come to see its value.

One possible interpretation is that the song is a commentary on the nature of love and relationships. It suggests that true love is based on accepting someone for who they are, rather than living in a fantasy that is not grounded in reality. The singer is trying to show his partner the value of real love, but ultimately, he knows he must step aside and let her go.

My wife grew up listening to marillion and fish as her father was the biggest fan, we went to see him live this year and I really connected with the beauty of his songwriting, sadly earlier this month my father in law passed away, and while we had some great times seeing him holding his daughter swaying to this song live will be one of the most beautiful memories, RIP Graham big love my second dad.

Clatching at Straws and Vigil are the two albums I have listened to the most during these quarentine months. Two masterpieces...

Fugazi and Misplaced Childhood are my two favourites. Fugazi because it was the first one i bought and Misplaced Childhood because the first couple of times i heard it was live, when Fish told the audience that he wanted to play their new album which has only two songs. One called side A and the other side B. They then played the entire album from start to finish!

Clutching at straws is one of my top 5 ever favourite albums.

When travelling in Iran, we ended up getting a ride from a Christian fellow who lived in the Armenian quarter in Esfahan. He secretly played this Cohen song, with the windows closed so the police wouldn't hear him play this 'haram' music. It was a mesmerizing experience. 10 years later, this song still brings me back to that time and place ❤
