Garden Of Remembrance
Fish Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He hears a voice
He tries to recognise the source and place the name
A face so familiar, the smile soft and warm
The memory evades him, his mind wanders on

Down rabbit holes
A darkened maze a place to hide and be alone
Where thoughts land like snowflakes in the palm of his hand
Swift melting moments, his tears a surprise
He tries to remember just what made him cry
With the beautiful stranger who was holding his hand

He's lost between the here and now
Somewhere that he can't be found
She's still here

Her love a ghost of memory
She'll wait for an eternity
He's still here

The empty room, moth eaten curtains
Drunken drapes hold back the light
But for solitary sunbeams, on dull chandeliers
Colourless butterflies, their fate now revealed

In silken webs, forever held within the sails of yellowed shrouds
That gather dust above the dance hall floor

The silent space
She stands alone and in her heart she hears the sound
The sweet lift of music that drew them so close
Their first dance together with a world at their feet
Not so long ago

He's lost between the here and now
Somewhere that he can't be found
She's still here

Her love a ghost of memory
She'll wait for an eternity
He's still here

They work the soil
They sow the seed, they're side by side upon the earth
Growing together, now forever apart
With a love so embracing, held in their hearts
But nothing between them, no memories shared
No recognition in his soft, pale green eyes

He's lost between the here and now
Somewhere that he can't be found
She's still here

Her love a ghost of memory
She'll wait for an eternity
He's still here

He's lost between the here and now
Somewhere that he can't be found
She's still here

Her love a ghost of memory
She'll wait for an eternity

He's still here
And they're still here

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Fish's song "Garden of Remembrance" allude to the experience of someone suffering from dementia or memory loss. The singer is depicted as hearing a voice and trying to remember where it comes from, but his attempts are futile, as his memory eludes him. He finds solace in retreating to his mind, described as "rabbit holes" and a "darkened maze," where he can be alone with his thoughts. However, even in his solitude, his tears surprise him, and he struggles to recall the cause of his sadness. The presence of a beautiful stranger holding his hand suggests a fading connection to the past and the familiarity of love.

The song also introduces a female character, possibly the singer's partner, who remains devoted to him despite his loss of memory. She stands alone in an empty room, hearing the echoes of music that once brought them together. The imagery of moth-eaten curtains, drunken drapes, and colorless butterflies represents the decay and stagnation that accompanies their prolonged separation. It is clear that they had a deep love, as they worked the soil and sowed seeds together, but now they are forever apart, with no shared memories and no recognition in the singer's eyes.

Overall, "Garden of Remembrance" portrays a poignant and heartbreaking portrayal of the impact of memory loss on a relationship. It highlights the devotion and resilience of the partner who still stands by their loved one, even when they are lost in the depths of their own mind.

I lost my beloved wife of 31 years 3 years ago. She and I would listen together to your music from Marillion to Feast of Consequences and cry at the poignant beauty your words created! Now I cry alone. This is a intensely emotional song and one of simple beauty for me! How much I would give to have her here to enjoy this with me! Thank you, Fish, for an amazing journey in song through the years! My Lori and I love you and wish you well my friend!

@pollyanna8061

All the courage for you, in this arsh moment! Fish still the one who knows how to read and sing a soul, since Marillion till this days!

Sorry for Your loss and wishing You many many moments of meeting (do I say "encountering"!??) Your wife in situations where You know and feel she is still there in other than the usual ways. My vocabulary isn't enough to express what I was going to say.

This song is so on point. It's not only a song, it's introspection and extrospection in balance, it's a sharing of loss and a sharing of vulnerability, regret and nostalgia for all that was and is no more. It's what many of us experience, at different levels, but we're too afraid to face. I can't thank Fish enough for the life insights that he has shared over the years...I am 53 years old now but have been following him since I was 18 years old. He has never disappointed, and never will. More than a musician, I think he is one of the most influential poets of our times.

@Mr.Batsu12

A friend introduced me to Marillion's music when I was 16. It was the Fugazi album and I soon bought Script, Misplaced Childhood and then Clutching At Straws to my collection and played them endlessly. I'm 53 years old now and I still love those early (Fish era) Marillion albums as well as the solo Fish albums. Thank you so much for a lifetime of amazing music sir.
