Daffodil
Florence the Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I couldn't have it, yes, I let it get in
The helpless hope to missing of spring
Worn out and tired and my heart never tired
And the world's bent doubled from weeping
And yet, the birds begin to sing
Ooh ooh oh

Daffodil, daffodil

I'm not bad, I'm not good
I drank every scar that I could
Made myself mythical, tried to be real
Saw the future in the face of a

Daffodil, daffodil
Daffodil, daffodil

You practice resurrection every night
Raising the dead under the moonlight
In the gloaming night, start to cry
You're a perfect pearl out in the sky

There is no bad, there is no good
I drank all the blood that I could
Made myself mythical, tried to be real
Saw the future in the face of a

Daffodil, daffodil
Daffodil, daffodil

English sun, she has come
To kiss my face and tell me I'm that chosen one
A generation soaked in grief
We're drying out and hanging on by the skin of our teeth
I never thought it would get this far
This somewhat drunken joke
Sometimes I see so much beauty
I don't think that I can cope

There is no bad, there is no good
I drank every scar that I could
Made myself mythical, tried to be real
Saw the future in the face of a

Overall Meaning

In "Daffodil," Florence + the Machine paints a picture of resilience and perseverance through hardship, using the titular flower as a symbol of hope and renewal. The opening lines suggest a feeling of regret or missed opportunity: "I couldn't have it, yes, I let it get in/The helpless hope to missing of spring." The singer seems to have been unable to fully embrace a positive change, perhaps due to feelings of inadequacy or fatigue. However, the song quickly shifts to a more positive tone, as the "birds begin to sing" and the daffodil comes into focus.

The chorus, with its repeated refrain of "Daffodil, daffodil," echoes the persistence of the flower in pushing through the hard earth to bloom. While the singer acknowledges past pain, they also refuse to be defined by it: "I'm not bad, I'm not good/I drank every scar that I could/Made myself mythical, tried to be real." The juxtaposition of the singer's determination with the fragility of the flowers emphasizes the beauty and strength that can emerge even in the darkest of times.

As the song progresses, the imagery becomes more fantastical, with references to "practice resurrection" and becoming "mythical." However, the overall message remains one of resilience and hope, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The final lines amplify this sense of wonder and awe, as the singer describes the beauty that surrounds them and the challenge of finding a way to embrace it fully: "Sometimes I see so much beauty/I don't think that I can cope."

When the song started with the fairy-high vibes, I was nodding my head and thinking "ok ok that's quite Florence." THEN 0:38 happened and my jaw dropped...the rest is history. Quite possibly my favourite in the whole album, this keeps getting played on repeat!

You have no idea how much I am thankful for you writing the lyrics. I am an old musician and lyricist who is now profoundly deaf. I love F + TM. I wear headphones so I can hear the music but I can't understand the words without cc or some angel like you. I suppose it's not unlike 'The Streetcar Named Desire' where sometimes you have "to rely on the kindness of strangers". Again, thank you.

Oh my gooooooodnessssss - mysterious, creepy, stunning, spiritual... I cannot believe she first thought this song would be too simple and boring because she repeats "Daffodil" in the chorus!
