King
Florence the Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We argue in the kitchen about whether to have children
About the world ending and the scale of my ambition
And how much is art really worth
The very thing you're best at is the thing that hurts the most
But you need your rotten heart, your dazzling pain like diamond rings
You need to go to war to find material to sing
I am no mother, I am no bride
I am king

I need my golden crown of sorrow, my bloody sword to swing
My empty halls to echo with grand self-mythology
I am no mother, I am no bride
I am king
I am no mother, I am no bride
I am king

But a woman is a changeling, always shifting shape
Just when you think you have it figured out, something new begins to take
What strange claws are these scratching at my skin?
I never knew my killer would be coming from within
I am no mother, I am no bride
I am king
I am no mother, I am no bride
I am king

I need my golden crown of sorrow, my bloody sword to swing
I need my empty halls to echo with grand self-mythology
'Cause I am no mother, I am no bride
I am king
I am no mother, I am no bride
I am king
I am no mother, I am no bride
I am king
I am no mother, I am no bride
I am king

Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh

And I was never as good as I always thought I was
But I knew how to dress it up

I was never satisfied, it never let me go
Just dragged me by my hair and back on with the show

Overall Meaning

The song "King" by Florence + the Machine explores the complexities of being a woman in a world that often expects women to conform to certain societal roles. The first stanza discusses a couple arguing about whether or not to have children and the worth of art. The singer acknowledges that the very thing she is best at, creating music, also causes her the most pain. She needs her "rotten heart" and "dazzling pain" to create material for her songs. She asserts her identity as a king instead of a mother or bride, rejecting the traditional roles assigned to women.

The second stanza continues this exploration of female identity, with Florence acknowledging that women are always shifting and changing. She questions the strange feelings and dynamics within herself, realizing that the "killer" within her is what drives her creativity. She again asserts her identity as a king, and the need for her "golden crown of sorrow" and "bloody sword" to create her art. The repetition of the phrase "I am no mother, I am no bride, I am king" reinforces the idea that Florence is rejecting traditional gender roles and embracing her own identity as a powerful, creative force.

Finally, the song ends with the line "I was never satisfied, it never let me go, just dragged me by my hair and back on with the show." This line speaks to the relentless pursuit of art and the sacrifices that come with it. Despite the pain and struggles, Florence will continue creating music and asserting her identity as a king.

That line reminded me of "No Choir" as well.

And it's hard to write about being happy
'Cause, the older I get
I find that happiness is an extremely uneventful subject
And there will be no grand choirs to sing
No chorus could come in
About two people sitting doing nothing

I'm so excited for the whole album.

“King” is the first single from Florence + the Machine’s fifth studio album, Dance Fever. The lyrics depict Florence Welch struggling with the desire of going on with her a career and a silent wish of having children, as explained by the artist in an April 2022 interview with Vogue. In her head, those feelings are opposite and don’t go well together, because she can’t see how kids could fit in her lifestyle.

"The whole crux of the song is that you’re torn between the two. The thing I’ve always been sure of is my work, but I do start to feel this shifting of priorities, this sense of, like, maybe I want something different."

The song was first teased in a letter sent out to some fans on February 21, 2022, that said “CHAPTER 1” and had a card inside. On the following day, billboards throughout London had the same card displayed, and the band’s website was updated with 15 cards, the first one being the “KING”, and an announcement that new music would be coming soon.

The single artwork was shot by American director and photographer Autumn de Wilde, who had already previously worked with Florence + The Machine by directing the music video for “Big God”. She also directed the music video for “King”.

This is the group’s first release since “Call Me Cruella”, released in 2021 for the movie Cruella starring Emma Stone.

@autumnphillips151

Witchy music is my specialty, probably my main passion, so I’d love to make some band recommendations to you since it seems to make you happy, too.

First of all, I absolutely have to tell you about the ‘60s band Coven, fronted by Esther “Jinx” Dawson. Although Ronnie James Dio took the credit, it was actually Coven that introduced the Sign of the Horns 🤘 to the musical world.

And now I have to tell you about the 21st century occult rock revival that revived the spirit of Coven. There are many great bands in this movement. I’m just going to name my top six favorite bands of all time (all of which formed within the last sixteen years) for now, though:

- Thundermother (not a witchy band per se, but a great all-female band that I just had to mention—don’t worry, we’ll get on to the witches again now)

- Jess and the Ancient Ones

- The Oath

- The Bridge City Sinners

- Blood Ceremony

- Twin Temple

I’d love to hear what you think of these bands :)

I'm now in Kyiv, Ukraine. I stopped listening to music, so I could hear sirens and identify explosions nearby. But... On the fourth day of that I suddenly bumped in this video. I decided to spend some time on it.
I don't know, if I will be alive tomorrow, so I want to write those words here for you, Florence. I want you to know, that your songs and your voice helped me to stay strong with all demons inside me, when I was teen. And now I am adult, I have to protect my country from real demons, from those, who kill peaceful people, my brothers and sisters. I'm all in this situation. Thank you for these minutes of calmness. I appreciate that.

“I am no mother, I am no bride, I am king” the scream of every woman who is tired of being tied to a role but has something inside of her, telling her, “ this isn’t for you, this isn’t you, you will always crave something powerful, you are meant for bigger skies”.

@willandrews9059

Not sure but yeah sure

@jarviscroatia2420

Florence Welch. I’m getting divorced from a very abusive husband and everyone keeps telling me I’m wrong because of who he is. You are giving me strength. Your scream is a voice for all of us. All I want to do is just take my power back and throw my voice to the heavens. God bless you.

@loserlove1987

It doesn't matter who he is. You don't deserve to be abused in any capacity. Take that strength and run with it!
