My Love
Florence the Machine Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I was always able to write my way out
Song always made sense to me
Now I find that when I look down
Every page is empty (ooh)
There is nothing to describe
Except the moon, still and bright
I pray the trees will get their leaves soon
So tell me where to put my love
Do I wait for time to do what it does?
I don't know where to put my love (ooh)
And when it came, it was stranger
Than I had ever imagined
No cracking open of heaven
But quiet and still
My friends are getting ill
So tell me where to put my love
Do I wait for time to do what it does?
I don't know where to put my love (ooh)
So tell me where to put my love
Do I wait for time to do what it does?
I don't know where to put my love (ooh)
My arms emptied
The skies emptied
The billboards emptied
My arms emptied
The skies emptied
The buildings emptied
So tell me where to put my love
Do I wait for time to do what it does?
I don't know where to put my love (ha)
So tell me where to put my love
Do I wait for time to do what it does? (Ha)
I don't know where to put my love
My arms emptied
The skies emptied
The billboards emptied
My arms emptied
The skies emptied
The buildings emptied (ha)
"My Love" is a melancholy and introspective song by Florence + the Machine. The song is about the struggles of a songwriter who has lost her ability to write, and is looking for a place to channel her love. The opening lines "I was always able to write my way out / Song always made sense to me," suggest that the songwriter has writer's block, which leaves every page empty and nothing to describe. The only constant in her life is the moon, which is still and bright against the worrying sky.
The chorus of the song asks the question, "So tell me where to put my love? Do I wait for time to do what it does?" The songwriter is lost and doesn't know where to channel her love. It is as if she is waiting for something to happen that will help her figure out where to place her love. As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the songwriter is dealing with a lot of sadness and loss. She has lost her ability to write, her friends are getting ill, and everything around her seems to be emptying out.
The final lines of the song, "My arms emptied / The skies emptied / The billboards emptied / The buildings emptied," capture the sense of emptiness that the songwriter is feeling. Overall, "My Love" is a beautiful song that explores the struggles of an artist dealing with a difficult period in her life.

If you have the opportunity to see her live I highly recommend it. When we saw her a few years back it was electric, it felt like a religious experience

My favorite trait of Florence is that her lyrics are the most poetic and biblical pieces of prose, and in interviews she'll just chuckle and be all, "Yeah that one's about a real nasty hangover."
Even in writing songs about writer's block while in quarantine, she remains the same grandoise artist she always was.

"Shower your affection, let it rain on me
And pull down the mountain, drag your cities to the sea"
- What was that about??
- Oh nothing this random guy ghosted me
Love her

Does anyone hear a touch of Annie Lennox in her voice?
