Too Much Is Never Enough
Florence the Machine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And the crown it weighs heavy
'Till it's banging on my eyelids
Retreating in covers and closing the curtains
One thing's for certain, oh
A year like this passes so strangely
Somewhere between sorrow and bliss

Oh, who decides from where up high?
I couldn't say I need more time
Oh, grant that I can stay the night
Or one more day inside this life

Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never enough
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never enough
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never enough
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never, never, never enough

Oh, you wondrous creature
Coming up who we are
'Cause I'm retreating in covers and closing the curtains
One thing's for certain, oh
A year like this passes so strangely
Somewhere between sorrow and bliss

And who decides from where up high (one other year, a hundred flags flying in a field)
I couldn't say I need more time (one day, felt it let go of me)
Oh, grant that I can stay the night (one other year, a hundred flags flying in a field)
Or one more day inside this life (one day, felt it let go of me)

Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never enough
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never enough
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never enough
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never, never, never enough

And who cares about the thing I did that night?
So what, maybe Luna had it right
And who cares if I'm coming back alive?
So what, 'least I have the strength to fight

Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never enough
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never enough
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never enough
Too much, too much, too much, too much, too much
Never, never, never enough

One other year, a hundred flags flying in a field
One day, felt it let go of me
One other year, a hundred flags flying in a field
One day, felt it let go of me
A hundred flags flying in a field
One day, felt it let go of me

One other year, a hundred flags flying in a field
One day, felt it let go of me

Overall Meaning

The song Too Much Is Never Enough by Florence + the Machine reflects on the feelings of a person who is overwhelmed by their own success or fame. The first verse describes how the crown, which symbolizes success or fame, weighs heavy on the person's head till it's banging on their eyelids, making it difficult to sleep or relax. They find solace in retreating under covers and closing curtains, perhaps to have some alone time away from the public eye. The chorus repeats the phrase "too much" as a reference to the overwhelming effect of success, and the phrase "never enough" can be interpreted as meaning that no amount of success can ever fulfill a person's desire for more.

The second verse introduces a sense of longing for more time as the person realizes that time is slipping away from them, and they cannot keep up with the demands of their success. The idea of someone deciding from where up high and granting them more time is a reflection of their desire to be in control of their own success. The bridge of the song describes the contrast between the person's internal struggles with their outward appearance of success. They feel like a wondrous creature in front of everyone, but inwardly they are retreating under covers, closing curtains, and struggling to cope. The chorus repeats a few more times, emphasizing the feeling of being overwhelmed and never satisfied.

Overall, the song Too Much Is Never Enough by Florence + the Machine is a reflection of the struggle and internal conflict that may arise with success or fame. It illustrates how even though success can bring its own privileges, it can also weigh heavy on a person's head, leaving them feeling unfulfilled and still craving more.

FFXV was beautiful in the way it depicted not only friendship but that destiny can be cruel and there's sometimes never enough time to do everything or express everything. Noctis had a huge burden on his shoulders. I also loved that so much of the big events took place off-screen, and you saw the characters reactions to it. To me, that was realistic and what I enjoyed about it.

@lunarya2855

Thank you for saying this. I'm sad seeing all the hate towards FFXV and Noctis. He's a tragic character, not a spoiled brat.

@jahanshadi1934

I just love FFXV, it's now my fav FF but I can't say that it's very constructive for naration having so much things off screen.. Many things in the game were not always written well. But My God, the friendship ! For me the best friendship of all the FF and the best villain. Ardyn is so good as a character.

@arreis7866

@luna rya Actually I do think Noctis comes across as bratty which is what makes him such a good character and so relatable. Here's this kid (20 is still emotionally young) who his whole life has been told "You're the chosen one, you have a grand responsibility to the world and must save everyone to fulfill the prophecy" WITH ZERO SAY in the matter. Of course he would be rebellious and gripe all the time! Who wouldn't!?

All he wants is to have a dad, see his fiance (wink, wink), and chill with his bros like any sane, normal person. But instead he loses his home, father, fiance, sleeps outside, has to fight an empire, and purge the darkness without knowing what that even means. It's a great, tragic twist on the classic coming of age story about growing up and accepting difficult responsibilities in life. It wouldn't have hit as hard as it did had Noctis NOT throw a bunch of tantrums about all the loss and hardship he endured. :')

IMO SE wasted a hell of a lot of potential in these characters and plot. I've been playing FF games since I was a wee one with the American release of FF2 [actually 4] and played every single one after. I played FFXI for years [literally, in accumulated game time, sadly?] and FFXIV as well for a long time. I'm old enough to appreciate the olds, but also enough to see the drastic change. FFXV tried to depict a deeper plot, but in comparison it just... didn't add up to what it could've been in to the older installments. Ultimately I found the characters to not even be remotely flushed out as to what could have been. That being said; I cannot knock SE for splurging on Flo as at the very least the soundtrack was phenominal.

@muhamadnabil6750

Agreed, those who hate FFXV is just a kid or grown up with a kid's mindset that can't understand how the world work, sometimes bad things happened, and sometimes good things happened

Despite the multitude of different songs from this wonderful group and artist, this has to be my favorite. Not because of the game, but because there is something so terribly beautiful and sad about this song and that feeling of struggle portrayed by the lyrics. This song resonates with me in a way that I can’t put into words; like I needed to hear it and understand it. It is simply amazing and I still keep it in my active playlist wherever I go.

@jasonwarnecke1560

This song hits so much harder once you've beaten the game. The feels...dear god the feels!

This universe is 14 billion years old ....and we are lucky enough to be alive with Florence ....

@Supertrooper697

Correction, the universe is ~14 billion years old, the Earth is just 4 billion, but yes ;)
