Oh, what hard luck stories they all hand me
Pack up all my cares and woe, here I go, winging low
Bye, bye, blackbird
Where somebody waits for me
Sugar's sweet, so is she
Bye, bye, blackbird
No one here can love or understand me
Oh, what hard luck stories they all hand me
Make my bed and light the light, I'll arrive late tonight
Blackbird, bye, bye
Bye, bye, blackbird
Where somebody waits for me
Sugar's sweet, so is she
Bye, bye, blackbird
No one here can love or understand me
Oh what hard luck stories they all hand me
Make my bed and light the light, I'll arrive late tonight
Blackbird, bye, bye
The lyrics of Florian Ross's song "Blackbird" depict an individual who feels misunderstood and unloved by those around them. They are tired of hearing the same sob stories from others and have decided to leave it all behind, hence "pack up all my cares and woe, here I go, winging low." The person longs for someone who will love and understand them, someone who is as sweet as sugar. They have hope that such a person might be waiting for them somewhere, and they are determined to find them, even if they have to arrive late tonight.
The use of the metaphor of the blackbird is interesting because the bird symbolizes freedom and the ability to soar above troubles. It is personal and purposeful, as opposed to being used simply because it rhymes. In addition, the repetition of the first verse at the beginning and end emphasizes the need for escape and the lack of understanding from those around them.
