This is nowhere near to a perfect isolated system in which all energy and matter stay within the system. Energy is lost when the water rubs against the air by friction! Or by radiation or whatever

If it kept going forever not only could you create energy by attaching a generator as previously said by another commentator, but in it of itself it could ever only produce enough energy to keep itself running.

Think of it as an equation.

The best you could get in a perfect isolated system (theoretically), is 1=1 where the energy created by the contraption powers itself and only itself, or the contraption doesn’t lose energy period.

In reality it’s

1-(energy loss from non-perfectly isolated system) = less than 1

Which is why a machine like that is impossible here with our understanding of physics, and if you made a machine 1=1 go collect your Nobel prize.

Attaching a generator would basically make

1= more than 1

Which just no.

Great video. Made one based on your design. Just a few comments:
1) Get bottles with flat (or nearly flat) bottoms. Don't get the bottles that have the 5 or 6-star bases. It's more difficult to make that top cap airtight
2) Take off the labels before you begin constructing the fountain. I recommend goo gone and vegetable oil to remove all traces of the glue before you begin.
3) Trying to drill through the hard plastic base of the water bottle is difficult and frustrating; it's much easier with a soldering pen to melt open a hole and then you don't need a large hole, just two straw-sized holes to match the holes in the top cap,
4) A better way (IMHO) to splice the straws is with a diagonal cut; the straws can then be connected almost without needing glue,
5) Also use a diagonal cut on the ends of the straws as you thread them through the holes. Makes it a lot easier to pull them through and then once you have the straws threaded, trim to diagonal edge to make them even again.
6) Glue the ** out of that top cap between the seams and the base around the top cap, it's where you'll get the most air leakage. Also, enclose the glue seal in duct tape to add more protection. It has to be completely air tight because any loss of air pressure will cause the fountain to fail.
7) In addition to glue, wrap the middle double cap with duct tape - maybe multiple layered colors for a nice effect. It will make the double cap more firm and stable.
8) Dye the water with food coloring to make a cool fountain and for an even neater effect, fill the reservoir with blue-dyed water and pour in yellow-dyed water. As the colors mix you get a nice shade of green.

There is a particular type of energy called "potential energy".
This is what you get from dams.
Dams store potential energy which is transformed into other types of energies used for cities, and among many other things, so that you kids can play the newest PS5
If there is a dry season, dams will get emptied, meaning there won't be more energy stored.
If you manage to keep the dam filled "all the time" , the same way this "supposedly" non stop fountain does... then voilá... you've got endless potential energy !!!

If you’re unscrewing the bottom bottle, then just having two holes for the straws at the very top won’t work because the straws will get twisted if they’re rigid

Amazing system! So cool. I wanted to add a system like this in a jar terrarium, with a capacity around 10L. So, my question is, can i reproduce the same system in "tiny" dimensions? <sigh> Heron was a Greek philosopher and inventor who came up with a lot of really cool gadgets using water and air pressure as well as heat activated mechanisms and the very first "vending machine"... The original was actually quite a bit larger and operated for a much longer time... the bottom two "bottles" or reservoirs were hidden from view and so it seemed there was a fountain that poured into the upper funnel but it never seemed to "fill up"... thus why it is called a "Non-stop Fountain" in the book he wrote called "Heron's Pneumatica"... Yeesh...

Tips from my experience:
1 use gloves.
2 with the glue use sand paper and another similar glue for a better grip of PP or PE (type of plastic used in bottles).
3 before putting al together, verify all the pieces watching all over again.
4 do not have high expectations and expect to fail in the firs attempt.

On a larger scale with a constant water source like a creek or even a natural spring you can make water go up in elevation 10x the drop with a burping check valve. My point is water and pressure and gravity and beating resistance with pressure is pretty cool.

Great video! Its possible to make a self feeding siphon setup, but what is really happening is that the potential energy of the water is being converted to kinetic energy and then back into potential energy. Of course even this does not run forever as you slowly lose energy in the system due to friction of the liquid moving through the system and due to sound energy (vibrations), however, you can make a self feeding siphon which goes for a long time if you do it just right, but it still wont go forever, this is just a more complex form of that as the energy is being converted from potential to pressure gradient to kinetic back to potential energy again.

Use a bigger bottle top cone section so there is more area for the fountain water to just go back into your water supply. It's great I'm going to make my cat a fountain but shorter bottle version so she can reach it. I'm going to glue it to a wood base so she don't knock it over!!💖

I just tried making this for the first time and it failed. My biggest assumption is because there is a pressure leak from the second bottle, and that's probably because I didn't glue the top cap properly (I don't have a glue gun, so I use a normal all-purpose glue), and also because my bottle's bottom surface is kinda wavy (makes it hard to closed it completely). Anyway, very fun experiment and I surely will try it again sometime!

I think your desire is shared by many of us, and I believe the solution is quite simple - maybe not easy, but simple. Larger bottles will increase the volume of water being circulated, and minimizing the straw diameter will minimize the flow rate. For water, the straws he is using is probably the smallest practical size. Increasing the bottle size, however, I believe has no limits (until the pressure capacity of the straws is exceeded). This will increase the period of the cycle. I hope that helps. I would definitely enjoy seeing it.

After watching this video, I had to search for actual non stop fountains tutorials on YouTube. I then found a video from Action Labs about polyethylene glycol. And then I jumped into Liquid Helium or superfluids. And then finally, stopped after watching a video about super solid and Bose Einstein Condensate.

See I had an idea similar to this, where when you take water and cause it to come up a tube and flow over a water turbine back into its own tank you can essentially have a perpetual motion machine that generates electricity. Except my idea used a fish tank and a few shelves to smooth the water flow back to the bottom while going over the turbines.

Come on folks, Heron's fountain is a hydraulic machine that demonstrates the principles of hydraulics and pneumatics. Flow of water from high gravitational potential energy to low gravitational potential energy causes a fountain to form, due to increasing pressure on the inside of the system. Great demonstration.

This comment may be a bit long but, necessary! Recall back in the 60s my fish aquarium filter system which attached to the rear of the tank came with this long plastic tube with a hooked shaped end. This plastic tube magically siphoned water from the very bottom of my tank thus, providing the filter system with an perpetual supply of water. One night during a midsummer thunderstorm we lost power ⚡ was at work at the time. When I got home had a big mess to clean up. Ya see quite a bit of aquarium water had now flooded by shag carpeting big time before stopping on its own. Ya see that long tube was non stop it would continue to feed water to the filter from the bottom even if unplugged. As a rule i had to first remove that tube before unplugging the filter pump or within seconds over the top of that small filter tank it quickly went spilling out onto the table and floor. Please note: if I didn't maintain the aquarium like keeping the water level full and near the very top, this self siphoning jazz would stop on its own after dropping a few inches...

When I first watched this vid I got excited because it seemed like the water would constantly flow like a water fountain without an electric pump based on air pressure alone. However, you will notice that he only ever shows the water going from the middle section to the bottom bottle. Both with the actual water and with the diagram (which you could do with a syphon and far less complication btw). And if you examine the diagram closely and ask yourself the question: after the water fills the bottom section, what makes it return to the middle? You will realize the only way that would ever happen is by turning everything upside down and "resetting it."

I have to hand it to him, he got his 5 million views, but I feel punked. Not cool. It's a Nonstop fountain for a whole two minutes - or in other words: a waste of three perfectly good soda bottles and three straws.

Not perpetual motion, but temporarily creates a stream of water. How much could the whole device be upscaled to accommodate a way to utilize the stream of water to create electricity?

Just turning a container that is designed a certain way, upside down and right side up - to periodically have a stream of water that might conceivably be utilized to create electricity.

It would take more energy to flip the container than you would get out of it. Ultimately it's using the potential energy of the falling water (from middle to bottom) to power itself. The water taking a detour to the top is neat, but ultimately the water falls more than it rises. So there's net energy released.

The reason this works is that the pressure of the falling water increases the air pressure in the bottom/middle bottles, which pushes water out of the middle bottle into the top. Again, since the water has to fall a greater distance from the top to the bottom than the water in the middle bottle has to climb, there is a net release of energy which acts as the power source.

A hydroelectric dam would be simpler and lose less energy to friction than this contraption, if power generation if your goal.
