Heard this first in the film "We were soldiers" and hunted it down. It made an instant impact. In the film it used effectively at a poignant moment.

Sorry Madelynn, but I do believe your credence of this certain time period is a tad misconstrued.

Lincoln signed the Emancipation Act to end slavery in 1862 (basically the reason why he was assassinated in 1865), and all Abolitionism was completed around 1865 for all those in states who rebelled against the Act and continued with slavery, about a century prior to when this song was released.

I believe you're referring to Segregation, which ended in 1964, a year prior to the date of this song. And by the early 70s, freewill was already in full bloom, in comparison to the time prior, with the African American and Hispanic race.

Not the entire country of the time of slavery was in favor for the doing. It was mainly the Southern Cultivation States, such as: Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Virginia etc., who were pro-slavery. The Northern States, weren't so accepting, such as: Indiana, Illionois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, the Wisconsin Territory, Iowa Territory and the Unorganized Territory of the Missouri Compromise. The reason why the country was split and went into Civil War in, 1861.

Furthermore, homophobia was not as brutal and rampant towards those of homosexuality in the 60s as they are in the now. It appears racism and homophobia has had a absurdly revamp, vicious emergence and presence in today's society with violence, killings and mass murder. They just weren't as openly inviting in the media in that era like today, for same-sex relationships.

In my opinion of discernment... we're living in a profound era in distastefulness of vast arrogancy, crudeness, narcissism, stupefaction and an extreme lack of common courtesy more than ever, and only seems to be manifesting itself even greater as time presses on.

I just had to clear up your understanding of the 60s, seeing how you are only 15 and still in the learning progression, and had to give some factual enlightenment.

I'm 84 now and can't help but cry 65 years later when I hear this sing. I lost my love of my life when she was 22 and I was 23. Never fell again for another lady in my life, still to this day I dream of her and what might have been. But I guess my answer will be soon, when I reach heaven and see her again. I was 15 when this song came out. Pre-stereo in our household. I had a 45 rpm copy of the song and I'd put it on the turntable. I would run wires to 2 4" speakers out of the hi-fi and place them on each side of my head while I laid on my back on the rug. A poor boy's set of headphones! I wrote to Mel Carter about a decade ago and told him how much this song meant to me and still means to me. One of the greatest songs in this genre.

My parents' favorite song. My Dad told me that when he double-dated with my Aunt and Uncle and this song would come on the radio, they would stop and get out and dance around the car!! They are all gone but one and this song makes me think of that story!

I was a teenager in the 50's. I could not get enough of the beautiful and romantic music I would play every day after school. This continued through all my life until I heard Mel Carter and fell in love with him and that awesome voice that sings the songs that melt my heart. Then I met my husband who was a radio announcer. Wow, talk about someone playing music dedicated to you! My husband is now in a nursing facility, never to return home because of the specialized care. When I visit every week, I play him music on the iPhone. He smiles at times, other times, we cry together. He was always very romantic. Now, after 50 years of marriage, I find myself missing his closeness. On the way to and from home, I play Mel Carter, cry some and sing along some, and hurt some but will never be able to play it for him because we will sob. I still wear my Little Band of Gold that means more to me.
Love one another and listen to Mel Carter; you will fall in love all over again!

When Mel Carter was on tour with the Turtles (and others) in the early 60's they entered a restaurant in Atlanta where a white patron got up and flung mashed potatoes and gravy all over Mr. Carter (One of the greatest rock 'n roll icons of the 50's)! This kind of behavior is still among us! This is what people teach their kids. As a white man I cry every time I hear this story!

I’m 15, and I like this music as well. I wish music was still like this. However, I’m glad to be born in the time I was born because back then, slavery existed, not everyone had rights, LGBTQ+ community was basically shushed, minority’s were mistreated, etc. I do love the music of the time though :) I just don’t like the times themselves too much. I would have been treated differently for how I am, so I’m glad to be born now. :D
