Heard this first in the film "We were soldiers" and hunted it down. It made an instant impact. In the film it used effectively at a poignant moment.
"They told me, be sensible with your new love,
don't be fooled, thinking this is the last you'll find,
..But they never stood in the dark with you love,
when you take me in my arms and drive me slowly out of my mind.."

The lyric, the tune, the singing, the harmony everything is so evocative it gets you all teared up.

I am not even an American, I am from East Asia, I did not listen to this song while growing up, yet it brings back a whole gamut of memories and feelings. Such is the power of this timeless song. Thanks to youtube we can get to relive these performances

Wow, love your comment!

An absolutely genuine, judicious post with such wisdom from a member of today's youth. Bravo 👏👏👏

Thankfully, there are those of you still out there who can appreciate authentic music with true, lyrical integrity.

You're so right! Music from the 50s and 60s were so jubilant, as well as meaningful, that can either touch your heart or make your soul feel incredibly phenomenal with joy.

I hope you continue to explorer and discover music from past times, for there are so many wonderful and not readily unknown artist's out there with magnificent music.

Just wanted to send you a few links, since you stated you love songs like this.

Hope you enjoy, Joanna!

This girl, was only 15 yrs old, such as yourself, when she recorded this single, in 1962.

@ Madelynn O.

Sorry Madelynn, but I do believe your credence of this certain time period is a tad misconstrued.

Lincoln signed the Emancipation Act to end slavery in 1862 (basically the reason why he was assassinated in 1865), and all Abolitionism was completed around 1865 for all those in states who rebelled against the Act and continued with slavery, about a century prior to when this song was released.

I believe you're referring to Segregation, which ended in 1964, a year prior to the date of this song. And by the early 70s, freewill was already in full bloom, in comparison to the time prior, with the African American and Hispanic race.

Not the entire country of the time of slavery was in favor for the doing. It was mainly the Southern Cultivation States, such as: Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Virginia etc., who were pro-slavery. The Northern States, weren't so accepting, such as: Indiana, Illionois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, the Wisconsin Territory, Iowa Territory and the Unorganized Territory of the Missouri Compromise. The reason why the country was split and went into Civil War in, 1861.

Furthermore, homophobia was not as brutal and rampant towards those of homosexuality in the 60s as they are in the now. It appears racism and homophobia has had a absurdly revamp, vicious emergence and presence in today's society with violence, killings and mass murder. They just weren't as openly inviting in the media in that era like today, for same-sex relationships.

In my opinion of discernment... we're living in a profound era in distastefulness of vast arrogancy, crudeness, narcissism, stupefaction and an extreme lack of common courtesy more than ever, and only seems to be manifesting itself even greater as time presses on.

I just had to clear up your understanding of the 60s, seeing how you are only 15 and still in the learning progression, and had to give some factual enlightenment.

I'm 84 now and can't help but cry 65 years later when I hear this sing. I lost my love of my life when she was 22 and I was 23. Never fell again for another lady in my life, still to this day I dream of her and what might have been. But I guess my answer will be soon, when I reach heaven and see her again. "Love never leaves the heart, till your heart loses the love".

@stevedudley2757

I grieve for your loss, but there's someone out there who needs that love you're saving for when you meet her again. Enjoy the time you have left with someone who never thought they would meet someone like yourself. I'm sure your wife would love for you to be happy on Earth. I wish the best love for you!

Lei è una persona speciale, come doveva essere speciale la donna che ancora ama , un'amore più unico che raro, un'abbraccio di Cuore,le auguro un sereno Natale

My husband came home from work one evening. He had heard this song on the radio on his way home. As I was busy fixing dinner, he followed me around the kitchen getting underfoot as he sang the entire song to me. He passed away a few months ago, just shy of our 50th wedding anniversary. I can’t listen to this song without the tears flowing and overwhelming heartbreak, yet I can’t stop myself from playing it over and over again. 2:28
