The Nearness of You
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's not the pale moon that excites me
That thrills and delights me, oh no
It's just the nearness of you

It's just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
It's just the nearness of you

When you're in my arms and I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams come true

I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me the right

To hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night the nearness of you

Overall Meaning

Frank Sinatra's song "The Nearness of You" is a poignant love song that celebrates the intense connection one feels with their significant other. The lyrics do not rely on superficialities like flashy visuals or sweet words, for the singer's infatuation runs much deeper. It's the simple closeness of the loved one that thrills and delights the singer. The moon's pale light or even a sweet conversation cannot compare to the sensation one feels when their beloved is close-by. The singer acknowledges that the most profound and fulfilling experiences happen when they hold their loved one close, and all their wildest dreams come true.

The singer does not need any external embellishments to enchant them - it is just the nearness of their loved one that makes their night complete. They ask the significant other for a simple favor - the right to hold them ever so tight and feel their nearness in the night. The song stands out not just for its lyrics but also the way Sinatra delivers them. His voice is rich and velvety, his phrasing effortless, and his pitch spot-on. The result is a timeless classic that still resonates with listeners today.

This song The Nearness of You inspired me to learn to play the piano at 84 years old with the tutorship of my son. Now I can play the song I've been listening to since my high school days.

I have yet to hear a song sung by Sinatra where every word is not understood. I guess he thought that if someone took the time to write such beautiful words it made sense to make sure that they were all understood. Like him or not personally he was the man at singing.

Not taking anything away from Sinatra, but the genius of this song is that anyone who sings it sounds great. It's a great melody and they lyrics are poetry.

This record contains, every single moment of interpretative genius, together with superb delivery, that explains Frank Sinatra. To me, at least, this is his definitive moment.
