... Throughout the 1950s, Laine enjoyed a second career singing the title songs of Hollywood films and television shows, including: Gunfight At OK Corral, 3:10 To Yuma, Bullwhip, and Rawhide. His rendition of the title song for Mel Brooks' 1974 movie Blazing Saddles won an Oscar nomination for Best Song, and his recording of "Rawhide" for the television series of the same name has become a classic of the genre.

Sweetheart, when you are not near
All that you claim must be true
For I'm just the same as you
[Chorus]
Sometimes I'm happy, sometimes I'm blue
My disposition depends on you
If I can find the sun in your eyes
Sometimes I love you, sometimes I hate you
But when I hate you, it's 'cause I love you
That's how I am, so what can I do?
I'm happy when I'm with you
Stars are smiling at me from your eyes
Sunbeams now there will be in the skies
Tell me that you will be true
That will all depend on you
[Chorus]
The lyrics of Frankie Laine's "Rose Ellen" express the deep affection and attachment felt by the singer towards a special someone named Rose Ellen. The song begins with his realization that time seems to drag on forever when she is not near him, indicating a longing and yearning for her presence. He acknowledges that whatever she claims about her own feelings must be true since he feels the same way too. The song's chorus emphasizes that his disposition and emotional state depend entirely upon her. He can be happy, or he can be blue depending on whether she is with him or not, and her presence in his life is the sunshine that drives away the rain.
The second stanza of the song talks about the stars and the sunbeams that seem to shine through her eyes since she brightens up his world. He hopes that she will be true to him and promises that his happiness will depend on her decision. Although sometimes he may get angry and hate her, it is only because he loves her so intensely, and he is happy when he is by her side.
Overall, "Rose Ellen" is a beautiful love song that highlights the emotional depth of the singer's feelings and his dependence on the woman he loves. The lyrics are poetic, and the melody is lovely, making it a timeless classic.

I love everything about this soul song. The great Frankie Laine lives on.
@ENACODNOM
According to one source (Country Discography), Frankie Laine recorded ROSE ELLEN on September 8, 1986.
The orchestra was conducted by Jimmy Namaro. It's a different version than the one on the NEW DIRECTIONS
album, running 20 seconds shorter. This one here was recorded for the Prestige label. NEW DIRECTIONS,
released in 1988, is on the Score label. The version here, although recorded in 1986, ended in the 90s album
as Mark Gallagher stated ten years ago. Lord, how time flies!
@loupi52
Many thanks for the informations.
@ENACODNOM
You're welcome, only I was partially wrong! After some more enquiries,
it appears that the tracks on the NEW DIRECTIONS and SOMETHING OLD,
SOMETHING NEW albums are the same and both labels belong to the
same company. Your version here is shorter only because you didn't take
it on till the ending! The recording year, though, is 1986, as I correctly
stated. Cheers!

I think Frankie first did this for a 1988 CD "New Directions" then it was put on his 1991 CD called "Something Old, Something New"
@michaelwalker2676
There is a certain similarity between 'Rose Ellen' and 'Fallen Angel'. A lonely, vulnerable woman of the streets.

When was that song written?
