The band first experienced chart success when their second single "Take Me Out" reached #3 in the UK Charts, followed by their debut album Franz Ferdinand which entered the UK album chart at #3. The band went on to win the 2004 Mercury Music Prize and two BRIT Awards in 2005 for Best British Group and Best British Rock Act. NME named Franz Ferdinand as their Album of the Year. From the album, three top-ten singles were released, "Take Me Out", "The Dark of the Matinée" and "This Fire". The band has also received several Grammy Award nominations.
The band is named after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria whose assassination was one of the main reasons for the start of the First World War. The band decided on the name after seeing a racehorse named Archduke Ferdinand win the Northumberland Plate in 2001, eventually coming to the decision as the alliteration and sound of the name appealed to them.

On a rafter
I reckon there must be a couple of million down there
And though I, cannot swim
We can learn together
Eating nothing but the sun and the lives of our
Caipirinhas
Yeah I feel alive
You better run honey
Yeah you better run
You better run honey cos the only thing they give you
From a swing is if you get up and run
You better run
You better run
You better run
You better run
You better run
Your blood in your hair
Honey there's that sound in my ears
But I'm still trying to survive
Oh I'm trying to breathe
I feel alive
Yeah I feel alive
You better run honey
Yeah you better run
You better run honey cos the only thing they give you
From a swing is if you get up and run
Oh yeah
If you get up and run
Oh yeah
If you get up and run
Oh yeah
If you get up and run
Oh yeah
If you get up and
I need a new kind of thrill
She said to me
So I feel alive
And though there's nothing that I wouldn't try
You just don't it get it
I need a new kind of thrill
I need a new kind of thrill
I need a new kind of thrill
I need a new kind of thrill
So I feel alive
Oh I feel alive
I feel alive
Yeah I feel aliveFloating off the coast of Mexico
On a rafter
I reckon there must be a couple of million down there
And though I, cannot swim
We can learn together
Eating nothing but the sun and the lives of our
Caipirinhas
Oh I feel alive

The lyrics of Franz Ferdinand's "New Kind of Thrill" suggests a desire for adventure and a hunger for life. The singer imagines floating off the coast of Mexico on a rafter, eating nothing but the sun and the lives of caipirinhas while swimming with millions of other creatures. Despite not being able to swim, they have a burning desire to learn and to feel alive. The song's chorus repeatedly asserts that one should run - but from what exactly or toward what remains unclear. The singer, though they seem to be experiencing some turmoil or upheaval, feels that they are surviving and trying to breathe.
The second half of the song returns to the insatiable desire for a new kind of thrill. The singer longs to feel alive with a newfound sense of excitement, but they seem equally frustrated by others who don't share their sense of urgency. The song ends abruptly, with the singer still searching for that elusive thrill, but feeling alive nonetheless.
Overall, "New Kind of Thrill" is a song about the human desire for meaning and adventure in life. The singer longs to feel alive by experiencing something new, but seems somewhat stuck in their current circumstances. The repeated refrain to run may suggest that taking action is necessary to break out of their current rut.
