Born in the Himmelpfortgrund suburb of Vienna, Schubert showed uncommon gifts for music from an early age. His father gave him his first violin lessons and his elder brother gave him piano lessons, but Schubert soon exceeded their abilities. In 1808, at the age of eleven, he became a pupil at the Stadtkonvikt school, where he became acquainted with the orchestral music of Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. He left the Stadtkonvikt at the end of 1813 and returned home to live with his father, where he began studying to become a schoolteacher. Despite this, he continued his studies in composition with Antonio Salieri and still composed prolifically. In 1821, Schubert was admitted to the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde as a performing member, which helped establish his name among the Viennese citizenry. He gave a concert of his works to critical acclaim in March 1828, the only time he did so in his career. He died eight months later at the age of 31, the cause officially attributed to typhoid fever, but believed by some historians to be syphilis.
Appreciation of Schubert's music while he was alive was limited to a relatively small circle of admirers in Vienna, but interest in his work increased greatly in the decades following his death. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and other 19th-century composers discovered and championed his works. Today, Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers in the history of Western classical music and his work continues to be admired and widely performed.

Die der kalte Nebel drückt
Könnt' ich doch den Ausweg finden
Ach, wie fühlt' ich mich beglückt!
Dort erblick' ich schöne Hügel
Ewig jung und ewig grün!
Hätt' ich Schwingen, hätt' ich Flügel
Nach den Hügeln zög ich hin
Harmonieen hör' ich klingen
Töne süßer Himmelsruh
Und die leichten Winde bringen
Mir der Düfte Balsam zu
Gold'ne Früchte seh ich glühen
Winkend zwischen dunkelm Laub
Und die Blumen, die dort blühen
Werden keines Winters Raub
O wie schön muß sich's ergehen
Dort im ew'gen Sonnenschein
Und die Luft auf jenen Höhen
O wie labend muß sie seyn!
Doch mir wehrt des Stromes Toben
Der ergrimmt dazwischen braußt
Seine Wellen sind gehoben
Daß die Seele mir ergraußt
Einen Nachen seh ich schwanken
Aber ach! der Fährmann fehlt
Frisch hinein und ohne Wanken
Seine Segel sind beseelt
Du mußt glauben, du mußt wagen
Denn die Götter leihn kein Pfand
Nur ein Wunder kann dich tragen
In das schöne Wunderland
The lyrics of Franz Schubert's song "Sehnsucht D. 879" capture a deep longing for a better place, far away from the confines of the cold and foggy valley. The singer yearns to find an escape from this bleak setting, imagining beautiful hills that are forever young and green. If only they had wings, they would soar towards these hills and feel immense joy. The person hears harmonies that bring a sweet heavenly peace, and the gentle winds carry the fragrance of soothing balms. Golden fruits glow among the dark foliage, and the flowers that bloom there are impervious to the ravages of winter.
The lyrics paint a vivid picture of a place bathed in eternal sunshine, with air so refreshing that it must be invigorating. However, the turbulent current of a river prevents the singer from reaching this idyllic paradise. The roaring and churning of the water fills them with despair, as if their soul is being drained. Though there is a boat teetering nearby, the ferryman is absent. It is suggested that one must have faith and take the risk, as the gods do not offer any guarantees or pledges. Only a miracle can transport them into this wondrous land.
This song delves into themes of longing, escapism, and the pursuit of an idealized world. It reflects the romantic sensibility of seeking beauty and tranquility in nature, while acknowledging the challenges and obstacles that stand in the way. Schubert's composition captures the essence of the lyrics, evoking a sense of yearning and the hope for a miracle to transport the soul to a better place.
