The Show Must Go On
Freddie Mercury Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Empty spaces - what are we living for
Abandoned places - I guess we know the score
On and on
Does anybody know what we are living for

Another hero another mindless crime
Behind the curtain in the pantomime
Hold the line
Does anybody want to take it anymore

The show must go on
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on

Whatever happens I'll leave it all to chance
Another heartache another failed romance
On and on
Does anybody know what we are living for
I guess I'm learning
I must be warmer now
I'll soon be turning round the corner now
Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark I'm aching to be free

The show must go on
The show must go on - yeah
Ooh inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on

Yeah, oh oh oh

My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die
I can fly - my friends

The show must go on - yeah
The show must go on
I'll face it with a grin
I'm never giving in
On with the show

I'll top the bill
I'll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
On with the
On with the show

The show must go on, go on, go on, go on, ...

Overall Meaning

"The Show Must Go On" by Freddie Mercury is a powerful song that explores the sense of duty and perseverance in the face of adversity. It addresses themes of emptiness, abandonment, and the uncertainty of life. The song begins by questioning the purpose of existence, as Mercury sings about empty spaces and abandoned places, suggesting a lack of fulfillment. The repetition of "does anybody know what we are living for" emphasizes the longing for meaning and understanding.

As the song progresses, Mercury acknowledges the challenges and hardships faced in life. He mentions another hero and another mindless crime, conveying a sense of disillusionment and the idea that life can be filled with heartaches and failed romances. The chorus, "the show must go on," serves as a mantra, a reminder to keep pushing forward despite personal struggles. This phrase encapsulates the idea that even when everything seems to be falling apart, there is still a responsibility to continue, to put on a brave face, and carry on with life.

The lyrics also depict a personal struggle within Mercury. He admits that inside, his heart is breaking, yet he maintains a facade, with his make-up potentially flaking. This contrast between the external appearance and internal turmoil highlights the strength and resilience required to keep going. The bridge offers a moment of reflection, where Mercury compares his soul to the delicate wings of butterflies and expresses a desire for freedom from the darkness that consumes him.

Overall, "The Show Must Go On" is a testament to the human spirit's ability to endure and persevere despite adversity. It conveys the idea that even in the face of personal pain and uncertainty, one must continue to face life with a smile and find the strength to carry on.

I dont understand why Brian explained it this way.

It was for the Innuendo album it would have been a huge waste of their time if it wasn't used.

If Freddie couldnt do it all they had to do was lower it its not as if anyone else could do it.

Brian did the demo and explained he wasn't able to sing it in chest voice only falsetto

To sing words in high range is a challenge for a good singer nevermind one who's very ill.

On different articles it says roger and john were jamming on others it includes Freddie which seems more likely
Their rhythm chord is what he used in the song as well as pachelbels canon which seems more like Freddie than Brian and richards suggssted a key change

Itv 2014 Brian said it was about a sad clown whos smile is painted on and they he and Freddie hammered out the words

Brian does tend to contradict himself a lot though
About this song he has said both that they did and didnt discuss the lyrics as in the meaning

But he has said a lot they wrote it together
Express that they spent the afternoon together and solidified the first verse and had enough to finish the last two verses and later added wings of a butterfly

The theme of the clown probably came from Freddie as the intro to hard life is from Vesti la giubba about a heart broken clown painted smile as the show must go on!
And its very much Freddie attitude in life especially when he was very ill keep smiling and on with the show!
Edit
Sing (words)High range
'In chest voice'

This is not the voice of a man about to die, it is the voice of a man about to become immortal.
