Living On My Own
Freddie Mercury Lyrics

Dee do dee do day
Dee do dee do dee do dee do day oh

Sometimes I feel I'm gonna break down and cry, so lonely
Nowhere to go, nothing to do with my time
I get lonely, so lonely, living on my own.

Sometimes I feel I'm always walking too fast, so lonely
And everything is coming down on me, down on me, I go crazy
Oh so crazy, living on my own.

Dee do de de, dee do de de
I don't have no time for no monkey business
Dee do de de, dee do de de
I get so lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, yeah
Got to be some good times ahead

Sometimes I feel nobody gives me no warning
Find my head is always up in the clouds in a dreamworld
It's not easy, living on my own, my own, my own

Dee do de de (lonely), dee do de de (lonely)
I don't have no time for no monkey business
Dee do de de, dee do de de
I get so lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, yeah
Got to be some good times ahead

C'mon baby

Dee do de de, dee do de de
I don't have no time for no monkey business
Dee do de de, dee do de de
I get so lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, yeah
Got to be some good times ahead

Yeah baby
Di di di di
Dibby dibby du-wop du-wop
yeah y-y-y-y-y-y-ow-yeah
Living on my own, living on my own
Living on my own, living on my own, wooh
da, day, day, day, day
di, di, di, di, di, di, di
Be-dop, be-dop, be-dop, be-dop
Be-dop, be-dop, be-dop, be-dop
Be-dop, be-dop, be-dop, be-dop
Woh!

Im sorry about your parents situation and how they were treated
but it's not fair to assume that all British people would not accept him unless he was famous
part of the reason he became famous is because as well as the music they accepted him and connected with him
again 'indian' without including parsi is ignoring their herritage and how THEY wanted to identify and were quite probably genetically or prodominatly persian
ethically 'parsi' ethnicicity is seperate to nationality
nationaality british indian
ethnicty Indian parsi they usually only said parsi
which i have explained before does NOTseperate themselves from india but is inclusive of persia india and their religion
indian is very vague and their ethnicty religion..could be anything
parsi or indian parsi explains everything

@blue bell If he was darker skin, and not been a famous singer, he would not be considered British, nor would you or any one else be trying to claim him as such.

The truth is that criteria which you cited would not apply if British people did not warm to him.

Anyway, let's agree to disagree. There's nothing disrespectful about calling a man what he is. I was trying to go by objective facts rather than sentiments or isolated comments from Freddie or his family members.

I think you haven't quite comprehended my earlier distinction between civic nationality, and nationality as a identity based on origin and culture. As I said my parents were born as British subjects, but that was not the same as being a British citizen. In Uganda blacks and Asians were not allowed to go on the same golf courses as white people, etc. So that British subject status did not mean that they were 'British' in the sense you would understand it.

As I said, my personal heritage, coming from parents of Indian heritage born in Uganda, while also having lived in the UK, and travelled extensively across India, gives me a slightly different understanding to yourself.

By respect your opinion, and you are entitled to it.

Let's just enjoy his music :-)

All the best

@Sammy Boy Jnr
and we're back to square one!

he was British and refferd to as British and had been since he came here at 18

he's registered as previously been a citizen of zanzibar we don't know if this was meant simply as where he was living or if he had applied for official citizenship and therefore/possibly nationality

his nationality at birth was automatically british indian as was his parents despite being born in zanzibar

we know his parents ethnicity was parsi (or to be clearer indian parsi) as was freddie on his birth certificate

dna wise again we are making assumptions there is no idea of knowing the fact that his parents were both indian parsi therers a high possibility that everyone in his family were or atleat prodominatlly and his colouring and features also imply this
there are articles as I have explained of recent tests on indian parsi people
that is why i think it's wrong to only claim that they were indian and imo it is disrespectful to them

language we are assuming we dont know i think it's very odd that it was never coonfirmedd
I have only seen her asked did they speak swahili which was the main language in zanzibar and she said no

imo the best way to explain him is what we know

he was British since he was 18yr
born in zanzibar of indian parsi parents(ethnicity)
(nationality British Indian at Birth died British)

at the end of the day that is all we know
back to your original comment claiming he was Indian
he wasn't!
and to identify him as Indian imo is disrespectful of their choice to become British and their herritage
that his parents were indian/parsi

@blue bell I think we are making a lot of assumptions here based on hearsay.

How Freddie saw himself is not really something we can definitively prove one way or the other.

But what are the facts:
1. He was born in Zanzibar, which, as with other parts of East Africa, was full of people from the Indian subcontinent. There were also small Yemeni and Lebanese populations there also.
2. Freddie Mercury was of a Parsi ethnicity/religion
3. Parsis have been in India for 1,300 yeata after fleeing religious persecution in their ancestral homelands.
4. During the 1,300 years in India, some Parsis intermarried with Hindus and Muslims. But the percentage here is not clear.
5. Bulsara was Freddie's surname, which refers to the village/town in Gujarat that his family lived in. In India naming your surname after your village is a method of displaying attachment to that place.
6. Parsis that came to India did not return to Persia/Iran due to fears of religious persecution and having no ancestral property or lands to return to.
7. Parsis in Gujarat do indeed speak Gujarati in their homes and have adopted many Gujarati customs and traits (which one would expect after 1,300 years).

@Sammy Boy Jnr
the original conversation was
you called them Indian I corrected you that they are Parsi
you have just said parsi doesnt invalidate them being Indian
exactly thats why I corrected you
saying thhey are Indian invalidates them being of persian decent and of the zorastraian religion of india
it only explains their previous nationality not their heritage
if i went to India to live and was granted my nationality would become indian as they became british when they came here

you called your pparents asian not indian so I was curious why when you chose to call his parents indian and didnt mention they were parsi
you could call them indian parsi if you dont think parsi is clear to people

nina both parents are parsi and her husband is parsi

both freddies parents are parsi

freddie was taught rp and never spoke with an accent not to hide his heritage but because thats what he was taught

looking at everything we know he was probably prodominatly persian
as far as culture is concerned
he lived longer in africa and would be aware of their culture but not really apart of it,they didnt learn their language wouldnt be apart of their festivities the iisland was prodominatly muslim
but they were in a community of parsi people
they are asian in broad terms as I am europian but I would never refer to myself as such
culture wise his parents and grandparents were born and brought up in India
were assuming they spoke gujarati but we dont actual know which i thinnk is odd
freddie wasnt born and brought up in india he wasnt brought up in the culture the same way his parents were only influenced by how his parents brought him up
not much has been explained
all they have talked about is being parsi and their religion zorastrian

his surname is Indian but unclear if it was a town made when they went to india or existing
his name according to his mother was a popular parsi name she didnt say indian name but its more commonly known as an arabic name and has several different spellings his is noted as parsi spelling

his parents can say they are indian parsi
it wasnt straight forward for freddie to explain
and if his family line were all and onlly parsi or his parennts beleived that to be the case then he probably didnt feel he could say he was indian not that he could claim to be persian either as culture therre would be different to parsi culture
as i said before he may not want to call himsellf parsi as it then assumes the religion
maybe he didnt feel comfortable identifying as any one thing
but the record comppany would think it would put people off not many people would understand what parsi was and to explain might cause issue with muslims if he started explaining well my ancestors were persian but they fled execution because of muslims then we had to flee zanzibar so not be killed by muslims bit of an awkward conversation!

not sure how he could look stereo typically indian?

he wasnt called farrohk since he was a kid

bulsara has ring to it but then opens up to all the awkward reasons ive explained
this may have played a part in it
but honestly i thik he just wanted a stage name
many have changed their name whenn theyve become singers

connecting with british culture did help him with the briritish audience Brian who is very tight upper lip did not connect with them
roger and brian were surprised how he spoke to them and how they responded to him

how do you think he should have explained himsel?
